I'm surprised that you need to tighten a Herbert. I've never played one, but the VH4 is tightest amp I've played. Seems the Herbie can't be far behind.
To answer your question, I use one of the following depending on the amp. OCD, Eternity, Wylde, BB+, or TS9. I really want to pick up either a MXR GT-od or a Maxon 808.

ive never played any amp tight enough. there is always this certain frequency that i hate on any amp at any gain level.

My favorite with the Herbert is the Xotic BB Pre Amp.

For me, when I play through a tube amp I almost always boost it too. A lot of the time it is to tighten it up, others its just because I love the feel of a boosted amp. I like the way they color amps a lot of times as well. My favorite boost thus far has been the Maxon od-808.

I boost my amps as well. So many do. Has nothing to do with how high gain the amp is. If a builder wanted to get smart they would incorporate an od type boost in the circuit right after the input before the first gain stage. One that could be switched on and off. That would sell.

Sounds pretty clean to me, just gives it that extra push and tightens the low end. Doesn't really alter the basic tone of the amp. Plus it is true by-pass so you don't have any tone-suck when it's by-passed.

honestly some features on some amps can do the same thing. like when i reord with a mark 5 i use the solo function as a boost. though i aready boosted it with a tube screamer

I love a clean boost on all my amps. Been using them for years and dont plan to quit.
Has to be a Transparent boost though. Something that wont really mess with the amps tone.
True bypass in a given as well.

Another vote for the BB Pre. I boosted the Herbert i had with it and currently use it in front of a Quick Rod as well as a Mesa Boogie Rect-o-verb combo. Seems pretty "transparent" (meaning the overall character of the amp remains intact) to me. True Bypass is a plus as well.

yeah, really like that pedal with the Herbert too, plus it doesn't seem to neuter as much lowend as some pedals do, while still giving it that boosted sound/feel.
