I also love the feel of a boosted amp, but some amps IMO have such a great pure tone that I almost feel bad tainting it with a boost/od.

By the way, the Boss overdrive/distortion (os-2 I think?) is the BEST Boss pedal to use as a boost IMO. AB'ing with the overdrive, super overdrive and DS-1 it just kills the others. It has just the right feel for boosting an amp (for me at least).

ive never played any amp tight enough. there is always this certain frequency that i hate on any amp at any gain level.

The only amps i could play without ever needing a pedal are my Fortin Cali mod, and some of the Mesa Mark series. Of course Engl's have a lot of tight gain but I'm not a fan of their tone that much.

ill have to try a fortin, but i have the 2 others and still would use a pedal. ialso love to carve my own sound so i would probably do the same with a fortin

I don't think Herbie needs any pedals... it just takes away from the tone IMHO.

Btw I don't want to be rude with you, but do you have to post your picture in almost every post?

I love my new MXR GT-OD.
Better than any TS, 808, Dano TOD/Drive or SD-1 I've tried.

why not i wish others would ilove seeing thier gear, its my favorite part of the site. i could look at gear allday

I was using the Transparent Overdrive last night with the Herbert(Timmy clone)
and its like adding another channel to the amp.
Does not mess with the voice of the amp at all. Just seems to do what its ment to....give it a clean BOOST and it sounds incredible with and without.
But its great for solo boosting!

Most of the time I didn't boost my Herbert but when I did I liked my od808, it's my fav boost and pretty much the only pedal I use. I had a bunch of other pedals but that wa my fav.

It is pretty sweet eh?

I use a Barber Direct Drive. It doesn't colour much at all, but makes it seem a little hotter, the way I have it set anyway. It's a great clean boost if you run it on the clean with extra drive for nice bluesy break-up. I don't use it much because I love the way my amps sound without, but a change is nice once in a while.

You really can't beat the price for that product either.

I boost my amps as well. So many do. Has nothing to do with how high gain the amp is. If a builder wanted to get smart they would incorporate an od type boost in the circuit right after the input before the first gain stage. One that could be switched on and off. That would sell.

Imagine you could have such a boost but it's also modular, so you could change it to anything you want instantly, any kind of overdrive available from a wide variety of vendors with a wide variety of settings (as few or many as you like), without cluttering up the amp's control panel. You could even have multiple boosts of different kinds set up at the same time, arranged on a floorboard, as few or many as you want, and you could buy them individually. You would also have the ability to use these boosts with amps other than that one particular amp so you would only have to buy them once. As your tastes change over time you could individually replace the boost "modules" and sell/trade them if you want, since they'd work with everyone else's amps.

It's too bad there's no such thing...

...oh wait, that's what overdrive pedals are. :)

Whoever figures out how to do this will be rich.

Soooooooo true!
Plus I love to be able to 'swap' them out at will and wouldnt want to be stuck with 'one' boost since each brings a little different flavor to the bench.

Busted on my "stealth edit"! D'oh! :)

Yeah in all seriousness I sometimes love overdrive pedals and sometimes hate them. And no matter what overdrive it is, I'll tire of it and want to change it. Sometimes I just use an EQ to boost the mids, other times I'll use something for hotter saturation, etc. I'm about as far as you can get from being a "pedal guy" but even so I have a few sitting around the house.

I am going to have to try the EQ in the loop. Hear alot about it but havent taken the plunge yet.
I only have one pedal to my name. A Transparent boost that I run in front of the amp. Sometimes its on.....sometimes off pending on the feel of the song we play or the mood like you mentioned.
I see some of these guys pedal boards and get blow away!

I would be tap dancing all night trying to figure out what is on or off or what I needed.... ;)
