Boosted Recto vs modded Recto.

So, I found a Roadster in a GC and it was selling for $999 and it was new, couldn't pass it up. In the back of my mind I was thinking I could always have it modded. Some of you guys rave about your modded Rectos. My Roadster is a 2x12 combo and it sounds good on it's own, the louder the better. But on my Bogner 4x12....it KILLS. And with a BB Preamp Holy shit! Honestly, the guys who shit on Rectos really have no clue. I'm guilty as charged as I didn't like Recto's for years. But the right cab and a little boost from a pedal and there's really NOTHING better for heavy. And I'm really surprised at it's versatility. Channel 2 Brit takes some tweaking but there are some good low gain tones in it

Now I'm wondering is it even worth the extra $300-$400 to get it modded. If the amp is too dark guess what I do? I dial in to be brighter. If it's got too much sizzle I lower the presence. If a Triple and Roadster have the same settings I can see the Roadster darker, but you can easily get it bright with some knob turns. hehehehe, he said knob!

But I'm wondering, if a modded Recto pretty the same as when I use a BB Preamp or Maxon 808?

Get it modded. Been up and down the boosted trail and it sounds great.....
But the modded Recto sounds AWESOME!! Let FJA trick it out. It will be a hybrid of a Mark III and Bad ass Recto.
I only have about $1400 in mine with mods....and its just so damn killer. I run the Boss GE7 in the loop and it sounds amazing. Not just hyping it man. This is the shizznit. :D

If you want the same core tone but with more tightness, aggression and better mids than boosting alone, you can preform the "pre 500 mod" to it.

I swear by this ever since I did this to my 2 channel Triple, I'd call it a reversion to old specs more than a mod though.

No...boosting isn't the same.

FJA modded Recto's are the best I have played. Highly recommend them.

FWIW, I still boost my FJA to add flavor.

Boosted recto through a good cab is serious business but the mods take them over the edge. In my opinion it's worth the extra $ for the mod but if you love the tone now, just play and be happy.

You should record a clip of the choadster.

Is there info on the Grail Forum about that? I can do simple mods myself. I've done the R2 mod on Mark III's and a few Lonestar mods but not much more than that.

^ Yep, there is info on how to do this to a 3 channel/roadster/road king since they share the same preamp layout, just would have to locate the parts on the PCB to swap out.

It should be easier to obtain these pre 500 tones on the newer amps than on the older 2 channel amps, but the later amps seem more crammed though.

So basically change the gain pots and change the one cap?

Yes, you can also jump the 100 ohm resistors on the cathodes for additional growl and tightness and change the presence pot values to your liking (I use 250k for the Modern channel which is used in a Rev C Recto)

I just played over some drum jams yesterday, anyone want sound samples of my amp?

No.....shyeah!!!!!!!!!!!

...on my Reborn, will changing the cap affect the cleans, or is this solely a lead channel mod?

The cap isn't in any of the later amps (3 ch, reborn, roadster ect) but can be added in, should bring you extra brightness and chime.

You would find the D power rail. V2 pins 1 and 6 each connect to 100k resistors, and on the other side of those resistors is the D power rail. Somewhere on this rail, you'll need to connect the capacitor to ground. I'm not sure where though because I haven't worked on a 3-channel amp, but there's a spot on this rail that's physically close to a ground.

Kyle's mod sound crazy good too. Go to around a minute in or so and listen how tight and pissed off it sounds.

I had my triple Multi watt in for warrsnty service, as it lost the treble pot on ch2. FJA is a certified warranty center, so while it was there, I had him mod it. My warranty is up anyway this year. I loved ch2 as is, but ch3 was a little too brash and harsh for me, so I had him mod only ch3. It's now my favorite channel, and I kind of wished I had him mod ch2 now, lol.
