Boss ES-8 or dump the pedals and get a Fractal FX-8?

No, I feel the exact opposite. To me the drive pedals work really well. I'm sure results will vary from amp to amp.

Exactly, to each his own. As I said, my buddy uses one in his live rig and couldn't love it more. I'm one picky SOB when it comes to some things, and as my wife tells everyone, I sell gear "over stuff only a dog can hear" :lol: :LOL:

It didn't work out for me, but it may be perfect for the next guy. Best way is to give it a try and see.

I bought an FX8 hoping it could replace it all for less hassle and save on some $$ selling pedals, but it didn't cut it for me.

I didn't like how the ODs reacted with my dirty channels as much as stand alone pedals.

Man this is exactly what I didn't need to hear.

A big part of my sound is boosting a crunchy amp so if the dirt pedals on the FX8 don't sound good doing that, I can't use it.

What exactly about the way the ODs boosted your dirty tones did you not like?

I loved the flexibility of dialing them in, but I didn't care for the actual sound and "feel" of the amp when using them boosting my dirty channel. It's the same reason I always hated using the Axe-FX. I didn't like how it felt to play it. It always had this artificial vibe that sat on top of my sound rather than blending with it.

Damn.

Do any other FX8 users feel this way about the ODs?

No, I think they're great. Best I've tried in a multi FX.

I have an FX8 and I think the drives sound great! It is easy to use and supper versatile. The editor is simple to use and all the effects sound great.

I play a lot of high gain stuff and the gate works just fine.

Fractal just released a beta update version today which addresses some of the issues some people have been having as well as added new features. I have has mine since October and I have had no regrets

I went with the Carl Martin Octa Switch MK3, the Boss was overkill for me. Should of done this years ago.
Should work great for live playing.

So with this latest FX-8 firmware update, can you now assign switches 5-8 as presets and switches 1-4 as instant access?

Yes
You can now assign anything to the footswitches

Get the FX-8. I sold a majority of my pedals to get one and I can't say enough about it, my GAS is cured as far as effects go! It was a bit spendy for me but since the money came from pedals I already had, it was an easier decision. It's definitely worth every penny and has exceeded my expectations. The versatility, functionality and features are incredible. I don't miss ANY of the effects I sold and have not used any of the effects I still have since using the FX-8. There is a bit of a learning curve but the PC editor makes it simple and very intuitive. This is one of the few guitar related products I've purchased that's lived up to the hype.

Here's a list of some of the effects the FX-8 replaced for me:

VOX 847 Modded Wah, EHX Micro POG;

VOX Ice 9 Overdrive, Xotic BB preamp, MXR GT-OD (modded), Homebrew Germania fuzz, Rat clone, Colorsound Peach Fuzz clone, BOSS SD-1 clone;

Eventide Timefactor, TC Electronic Hall of Fame Reverb, TC Electronic Alter Ego X4 Delay, Line6 M9.

I don't agree either. I wasn't really expecting the drives to be very good but some of them have more than impressed me and they have replaced ALL of my drive pedals.
