Episode #22: Boss PS-2 Pitch Shifter/ Delay
Until now, I had absolutely no experience with pitch shifters. I'm more of a meat and potatoes guy (distortion and delay). It was a bit of an interesting journey trying out the PS-2. I'm not a weird noise/ shoe gaze player at all, so my demo will probably be relatively pedestrian compared to the experts out there.
Paraphrasing from Bossarea.com: The PS-2 Pitch Shifter/ Delay was the first pitch shifter by Boss and the first Boss pedal to use dual circuit boards. It has 6 modes; 3 modes for delay, and 3 modes for pitch shifting.
From what I understand, there is a lot of feature overlap between the PS-2 and the PS-3, with the exception of the 'manual pitch shifting' mode 4 in the PS-2. The delays in modes 1-3 sound pretty good. I could easily use this in my rig for delay alone.
I'm not a huge fan of the pitch shifting in modes 4-6. They sound a bit wonky, and not super musical. The only real star of the show is the manual pitch shift mode. But for the life of me, I can't turn the manual knob to any sort of musical interval. So, mode 4 is basically a fun crazy mode, for people who like that sort of thing.
Overall, the PS-2 is a cool pedal. The delays are worth the price of admission, and you get some weird pitch shifting thrown in. I wish that they had created a mode where you could combine pitch shifting and delay, but I think that was a little too much to ask the technology to do. This pedal came out in 1987, which is quite a feat. Thanks!
