Boss SD-1 - I'm digging it!

SD-1 boosting a crunchy Marshall is just a classic recipe that never fails.

Welcome back to the fold. I play mainly 800 type amps and I find the stock sd-1 delivers the goods. It really does sound like part of the amp. Plus it makes your 800 a channel switcher at the tap of a foot. TS types have a softer low end and not as much gain I find. anither cheapo I love is the bad monkey. In bypassed mode IT has a buffer that adds something. I have compared it to boss pedals and other pedals and still, I gotta have this little bastard in the chain. It adds clarity when turned off. Weird I know. Try it people!

sounds good man! is that the large box plexitone or the small one? Pete Thorn did a demo on the small one that was one of the best pedal demos' I've ever heard.

yeah, I think I always thought the TS was more open sounding. but regardless the SD-1 is doing what I need now lol

Sounds bitchin! Is that the newest plexi drive? I think I hear some john norum licks in there too. Dig it

Well I am from Denmark, so the Scandinavian John Norum touch might be what you heard ;)

It's the old Plexitone with two channels and a boost. Best distortion pedal for modded Marshall-sounds I've ever heard.
 
The sd-1 adds a nice defined edginess to my tone. Love it.
 
SD-1 into a Master Volume Marshall is cool (JCM800).

I don't like it with anything else, whereas a TS-9 sounds great with many different amps.
 
I agree, the Bad Monkey is another awesome alternative.
 
was the first pedal I ever bought back in 83...still have it. Used and abused and still rockin ;)

my fav in front of JMP/JCM800 2203's and 4's

If you find a regular ts-9 or od808 or other tubescreamer too smooth? then do yourself a favor and get a SD-1. I find it is great for fast plam muted riffage and single note stuff cause it's got a top end crispiness that gives the tone definition. Sometimes a od808 is just a bit too smooth, so it can blur fast lines a bit. Not the sd-1... it's more aggressive sounding than most other OD's. It's a great boost pedal for any Marshall style amp.
 
I used to think the SD-1 left a lot to be desired. It always sounded too thin and ratty in the top end compared to a tubescreamer with the amps I had at the time. Fast forward a few years and a new stable of amps, and I was finding my TS's to be too smooth and overly middy with one of my amps. I decided to try an SD-1 again and it was perfect. It sounds great with my other amps as well. Maybe it was a bad match with my other amps or my tastes have changed, but my opinion on it has done a 180.
 
So what are you guys favorite settings for the SD-1? Care to share your favorite settings?

I have one of the Taiwan SD-1's I've had for years and haven't used for years.
 
I have a late model SD-1, never used it until 2 weeks ago with a 2555sl and it sounded great but had a strange artificial sound to it. Looked it up on google and found the C6 removal mod. After that it now just sounds like natural distortion and has now convinced me that a medium gain amp boosted is the way to go!!! No more high gain monsters with 7 preamp tubes!!!!!!!
 
I run mine with the level dimed, tone 12 o'clock, and either gain all the way off or at about 9 o'clock. This is on a 2555sl on the lead channel with the gain at 7.5. On a jcm800 2203 preamp vol is dimed. It gives me a Iron Maiden type tone with a little more gain, on the 2203 more of a Zakk Wylde tone raw but not harsh.
 
Gain and volume at 1:00 and tone at 9:00. I run mine as a solo boost for a bit of a gain goose.
 
SD-1 and a Marshall is the best 80's tone you can get.....Does not get any better :rock:
 
Believe it or not the SD-1 also sounds great in front of a modeler. I have a Line 6 Flextone III that I use for practicing. I needed a little more gain and sustain so I took my SD-1 that I use for my 2204 and stuck it in front with all knobs at noon. It's the best sounding practice set up I've ever had. It's the swiss army knife of overdrives.

Also, try the Monte Alum mod on it. Makes it even more versatile and will help with the low end that some complain about.

For boosting my Marshalls i use level at 3 o clock gain on 8 o clock and tone at 1 o clock....Sounds killer indeed
