I just bought this LP on eBay
http://www.ebay.com/itm/2005-Gibson...EWArwmHAXnLCo4T4fMYNM%3D&orig_cvip=true&rt=nc

seller charged $80 for shipping as stated in the auction which I thought was high but considering the overall deal I went ahead and bid. OK, no probs.
Now before shipping it he sends me a msg through eBay stating UPS will only cover $100. He says he told them it is worth $1200 and they say it is an extra $25.
He asks do I want to pay the extra $25 (already paid the $80) for insurance. I msg'ed him right back saying I think $80 should cover it as stated in the auction and that $80 was kinda high anyways.

I've bought tons of gear off eBay and never had this happen before. Anybody else have this happen before. What do you guys think?

Tell him that is not a fair deal and ask him to please refund your payment as this is not clearly stated in his auction. He should want insurance for himself. If the item is damaged you can file an Ebay/Paypal claim that item not as received and you will win.

He's full of shit. I just shipped a 60 pound amp with 1400 insurance for $55. Nonetheless, it's his problem not yours. He should have priced it correctly in the listing if he needed more.

sorry, he made an error on shipping costs, that is his problem, not yours. I wouldn't accept it if he doesn't pay the insurance. I bet he went to a UPS store and had them pack it.

I got a R7 shipped to me UPS 2nd day for $80 and insured $2400. I was willing to pay that because I didnt want it slowboated giving UPS more opportunities to kill another guitar :)

94% seller feeback should be a red flag ;)

Yup full of shit. I ship everyday with UPS for work and that's totally bullshit rates. I'd back out of the deal if you can. Don't even deal with that POS.

Agree with all above. If you want the piece however, he needs to meet your requests, shipping as mentioned above is his deal. I've had to eat extra shipping before because I miss-calculated.

If he turns out to be an asshole...as I've run into on eBay before; save all correspondence with this person from inception, copying everything to your personal account. If he balks at your proposal initially, don't hesitate to open a dispute on eBay and notify PayPal.

Hope it works out for you.

seller has agreed to insurance for the original shipping cost of $80. We'll see what happens, praying for the best now. He is original owner, it looks real clean.

winning an Ebay item is basically entering into a contractual agreement to purchase something. The seller cannot go back and ask for more $. I would just pay what the original total was.

that's a badass guitar- good score. That guy ought to know with the way ebay's changed the rules in the last couple years if he does't insure that guitar and you get it and it's screwed up, he's f*cked. You get your money back and he's stuck with really expensive firewood. You just gotta make sure he packs it correctly so it doesn't move in the case or move in the box- and I always make sure people wait until monday to ship so you're less likely to have a guitar on a truck somewhere over the weekend that could be in 100+ degree heat- that's a no bueno.

UPS should be an extra .90 for every $100 to insure.

It actually depends on the UPS store. The one by me charges an extra $3 for every $100. :bleh: Nevertheless, the dude fucked up and that's not your fault.

You are dealing with an amateur. Look at his seller feedback. Mostly nickle and dime shit he has sold. He has likely not had a sell of value over $100. At least you have some buyer protection. If it arrives fucked up, its on him anyway, insured or not. When you get it, leave him some shit feedback.

I go to a UPS Hub, never a UPS store. Sounds like the stores are making money or covering their ass.

Why do you even have to come here to ask this? He is trying to recoup some of his low price on the fair price of the classic, in the shipping provided he isn't having it packed and shipped, which is his problem anyway. You already agreed to his high shipping cost and paid it. Done. If he doesn't like it, walk. As previously stated, the shipper has to make any insurance claims should there be any problems during shipping, so fuck him if he doesn't want to insure it. If the guitar gets destroyed in shipping, he has to file a claim. If he didn't insure it, he is out the money and providing you covered yourself with paypal and paid with a cc or something, you are covered. It is in his best interest to pay the insurance.

A sellers feedback means hardly anything anymore on Ebay. Its not like the old days when a buyer had to actually be concerned about the feedback they left for a seller, because he'd get a negative thrown right back at him. Now, a buyer can leave whatever inappropriate crap feedback they want and a seller has no recourse. Thats the truth. So 94% doesnt really mean squat. On a note more directed to the OP, IMO, $80.00 should cover getting the guitar shipped to you and insurance. I wouldnt pay for it. You paid enough. As others have stated, if the guitar is damaged, its pretty easy to file a claim and get your money back. The insurance is really more for him than you and if he doesnt realize that, then maybe he just isnt real bright? :aww:

We ship everyday and any extra shipping cost that may occure for any reason is taken care of by us......Just part of doing business...

Update:

Thanks everyone for chiming in.
Received this LP today. It really was the original strings. Holy smokes, so much rust on the strings, frets and hardware tarnished. I was 3 hours scrubbing and polishing but it is looking sweet now! No marks on it whatsoever and frets have no wear at all. Big bow in the neck however, I guess from sitting. I gave a crank on the truss rod and will let it sit tuned to pitch. Seller included original bill of sale in the case. Guitar was bought at GC 09/03/05 in Totowa, NJ. Kind of cool to have.

His fault since he didnt state the shipping cost right for the first time.. If it wasnt including insurance he should have notified in a way before he messaged you to ask you to pay extra
