Langners were way ahead of their time. I still use a DCP1 and 2 Marshalls with his 5 stage mods all the time for recording. I love 'em!

I've had the pleasure of meeting Todd Langner back in 1993 at his original shop in Oakland. Todd helped me build my first guitar rack with my ADA MP-1 preamp/Rocktron Intellifex/Peavey 60/60 power amp. He offered me his 3TM mod tube circuitboard for the ADA MP-1 preamp. Not knowing what it was, I politely declined and just played my MP-1 preamp stock for years & its issues. ADA goes out of business, rack gear falls out of favor with the advent of alternative/grunge rock music, and Todd is still modding/building amps. Todd leaves the amp building business to work for pro audio and Langner amps goes out of business. I move away from using rack gear and use high gain, multi-channel amp heads or combo amps with a simple delay rack.
Around 2005, I discover the ADA Depot website and that 2 of the guys on that forum have reverse engineered the Langner 3TM mod tube circuit board, made improvements to it, and started selling it to the forum members. I send my stock ADA MP-1 preamp which needed repairs & upgrades to Hairston Bagg (aka Rob Metzger) in New York. Hairston fixes all of my repair issues and upgrades my MP-1 preamp with the 3TM mod tube circuit board and the "Ultra mods". It gave my stock MP-1 preamp much more quieter, better features, and a lots of gain in the distorted & clean tube channels.
Before 2005, I knew a bunch of local guitar players in northern California getting amp mods from Todd. Todd was our uber amp modder like Cameron/Bogner/Fortin/etc. I heard a few of the modified Marshall heads and they all sounded quite good. I didn't own a Marshall amp head at the time, was still using the guitar rack, and wasn't motivated to buy an amp head or have Todd perform his magic mods on it. I wish that I did as the value of the Langner modified amp heads are equal to a Cameron modded am these days. Todd Langner was definitely ahead of his time concerning amp mods/ preamps/power amps/cabs. Unfortunately, he is no longer with us. RIP Todd! You were always cool with me and thanks for helping me out when I was starting out with my simple guitar rack rig.

Really nice, humble guy. I met him in the late 80's (whatever year the JCM 900's were released) I had pre-ordered a JCM 900 and when it came in, it was nothing like I had expected. My guy at Thoroughbred Music in Tampa gave me his number and said "This is the guy to send it to." He really did an amazing job on it, it took a bit because of the solid state stages in the dual reverb 900's, but I was literally shocked when I got it back. The amp sounded better than anything I'd ever heard to that point. I believe its the only 900 he ever modded. I know for sure it was at least the first 900 he had ever modded, he said he needed some extra time to figure out the new circuit, and how to get rid of all the SS shit they had in it. I tried not to bother him, I know he had a bunch of 800's he was doing for the Viscous Rumors guys, but he called a few times just to keep me in the loop. Really cool guy. He's one of those guys who always has more under the hood than he lays on the table![]()

In a moment of weakness, I sold the amp to a friend who had landed a huge gig and needed a really killer Marshall and immediately knew it was a mistake. It took me 6 years to get it back from him, but I finally did bring it home.
Ive gotten more stuff over the years, but I'd never sell any of my Langner stuff. Its amazing every time you plug into it.
Its pure juicy tube goodness!
Mike Fortin did an exact 5 stage Langner mod to a JCM800 I had, he knows that circuit better than anyone alive today. He also put Todds tube buffered loop in it, and the "hyper" mod from the DCP1 Elite preamps. It may be the only 5 stage JCM800 in existence that has the Hyper mod, not sure. Its one of my all time favorite amps. Mike owns the legendary white 5 stage JCM800 that Langner did a long time ago. Ive tried to buy it from him for years, and he won't sell it. Cant blame him at allWhen I spoke with him about doing the amp, you could tell he had a lot of respect for Todd and his work. Thats saying a lot, Mike has seen everything under the sun and is probably not easily impressed

@JTyson: I'm guessing that you reside in northern California and looks like you've had a number of amps modded by Todd Langner or have purchased gear that was either modded or made by Langner. You're very fortunate to have Todd install his amp mods in your amps when he was still alive. Thank you for letting me know that Mike Fortin is duplicating the Langner amp mods, but it looks like he's not accepting any amp mods on his website. I don't know if you know Bob Koons. He shows up at a local jam night, brings his vintage Gibson guitars & a Langner DCP-1 preamp, plugs into the amp's input jack, hides the preamp behind the amp, and starts wailing away with his fusion/rock playing. Monster guitar player and a nice humble person to boot.
Who's Brent Gutierrez and what kind of amp mods is he doing that sounds like the Langner amp mods? I've never heard of that guy before until I saw that video.

Well, I lived in cali years ago but currently live in Alabama. Mike is not really offering those mods, I asked him if he would be willing to do one with Todds loop and the Hyper circuit addition. It was a one off thing he did for me at the time. Dosent mean he wouldn't do another one, he just won't have anything on the site about that specific mod. We had been talking about different mods for quite awhile and I knew he could do that circuit exactly, with all the power supply changes and other things that at the time, were uniquely Todds. The only difference was the stabilized, regulated DC power supply to the tubes that is Mikes own design, and is self contained, and has a super low noise floor even at ridiculous gain levels. Its super quiet. He did a fantastic job on it. Mike has never been a name dropper, he studied the circuits of those who did amazing stuff before him to help him come up with next level designs as anyone who has ever built tube amps did. There are schems floating around the net of Todds circuits, but they are incorrect in multiple areas. Mike knows the circuits of every heavy hitter who ever put something out that really stood out in the high gain realm. I was lucky to get him to do that one for me. He can literally build anything you can dream up, but you better know what you want and be able to convey to him in real terms what that is.Hamer95USA":b84ztx3n said:JTyson":b84ztx3n said:Yeah, it sucks that he's gone. He's a guitar builder out of Phoenix Arizona, who used to work with HBE pedals who were endorsed by Gary Holt from Exodus, Brent built him a guitar, and Pedals, Gary had his Langner Marshall but had an issue with it, Brent offered to look at it, turned out to be a bad tube or something simple, He asked Gary if he could copy the circuit for himself, me & Martin. each one is slightly tweaked for each amp, but overall is Todds design.
He has a forum on here as well, although he's been kind of quiet lately, health problems have slowed him down, but he's getting back into the groove.
