RIP dude, they were all great when I met them. Sad indeed

My Dad told me no motorbikes when I was a kid. He said "I wanted one, and my folks said no, because on a bike, you're wrapped around it. In a car, it's wrapped around you". Turns out his best friend was killed while riding a motorbike back when they were in high school.

Met Brann and Bill back in 2017 when they were out with EoDM. Hung with Jesse too.

Down to earth, chill dudes with an attitude of gratitude.

Listening to Billy Howerdel last night on Tone Talk reminded me of something:

These guys are all just like us. Fans that made it. That was the vibe from Brann and Bill too. No self-conceit superiority egotism within whatsoever. Just hard work paying off. A lovable bunch for sure.

I hope their next record is their biggest.

Yeah dude they were all the bros. This was at a small VIP hang when they did the Crack the Skye anniversary tour

In reality the split up was bound to happen.
Look at Hinds against the others, you can see he was still a filthy road dog while they went the pretty boy Floyd Viking guy, LTFOL dudes!
He brought the “Cobain” torchered soul to the mix…and could back it up with chops..but for how long ya know?
He now lives in his music that’s for sure.

Y’all want some real reality driving’ on them roads??
Any of you dudes drive through Detroit on 75 at night??
-that’ll learn ANY driver on planet Earth right there.
100mph minimum, multiple cars with no windshields/lights/insurance etc..
They’ve got nothing lose and you can’t get water from a rock AND they got somewhere to be!
All you can do is haul ass or get your ass eaten.

Now here’s the real concern driver’s of today need to be aware of:

In Florida, there’s a large landscaping industry.
Companies mow & service properties 12 months a year.
All those large commercial properties, Malls, Fairgrounds, Apartment Complex’s etc…
Somebody’s gotta get out there and do the work!
Hardest hang-up for small companies?
-Driver’s.
So how the fuck does all this work get done daily?
However they can get it done and get away with it..
You think all those Hispanic guys driving those construction vans, landscape trucks, roofing trucks have Fl Driver’s License’s??
9 out of 10 don’t is the fuckibg bold ass reality.
Why is this so important?
Most of them cannot read English and do not care too.
How are they reading road signs?
-they really don’t in Mexico.
They don’t care and if they get busted they just go home for a while and come back through the desert in the summer.
The Police are well aware of this btw.
Guess what?
They’re outnumbered.
In the sense of constantly stopping vehicles and performing arrests knowing the inevitable .Somebody’s gotta mow the commentaries of the elite politicians neighborhoods right?
They’ve filled that void to strong arming their way around the law.
It’s that simple.
Strong arming.

So you never know if those driving amongst you can even comprehend the laws of the road and have no desire to ever comply because they don’t have too!
THAT!! Is one good chunk of why the roads are so dangerous, add all the other reasons of your own experiences.

Does every thread in here have to have that one political post?

Also, the odds of it being a BMW SUV full of immigrants on a landscaping job at almost midnight are near non-existent, so the pertinence of the above rant is moot.

It's far more likely some dumb ass on their phone regardless of color or immigration status.

I can hear it on Joe Rogen tomorrow.

"Did illegal immigration lead to metal god, and former Mastodon guitarist Brent Hinds death? Just hear me out bro."

Life is so random. Here you have one of the more reckless and unpredictable dudes in the biz. Everyone knows about his problems, his mouth, and how he has been existing on trauma responses even before getting fired from the band he "didn't want to be in" anymore.

But this time, someone who may normally be a totally innocent, rule follower, JUST PLAIN FUCKED UP, and didn't see him or whatever and now you know their life is fucking ruined.

I have to admit, my first thought was "welp, Brent was wasted and became another fucking cliche", but that wasn't the case this time!

its just crazy how life works some times.

its like with Dimebags death.... just like Zakk said "Alcohol was supposed to kill Dime, not (so and so)..." i forgot the exact quote, but i know i have the first half right.

just to make this more about me and my views... Brent will be known forever to me as the guy that helped kill my "rock and roll dreams".
I had a friend who had already gotten cozy with Mastodon while they were still playing bars in the early 2000's and any time they came to town they met at a bar, or hung out after the show. So when Mastodon opened for Slayer at Harpos back in that era, i went to the gig at like 3pm with him and we hung out with Brent for a while that day. One thing i'll never forget, is standing behind harpos on clear summer day while Brent was changing the strings himself on that white V, sitting on the railing that stops cars from driving on the freeway overpass for pedestrians. He was talking about how he lost all of the money from the last tour he did by gambling in vegas at that stop on the last tour. He said he had to spend a few months doing roofing to get by between tours. I asked him about opening up for slayer and how its probably tough right??? he started telling me about the "luggie wars" with the crowd. he bragged about how in chicago last night, he kept getting shit from one guy, and he got him "real good" right in the face at the end of the set. As he spoke and told us all this candid shit, it made me realize how NOT cut out for touring life that i was, and i remember after that day, i had this profoud new sense of "fuck it, i'm just going to make music for me, and use it as "my thing for me" than try and set my sights of touring and what not. i know it seems like a "anti inspirational" story, but it was exactly what i needed to hear at the time.

Anyway, R.I.P, because i know he needs that peace.

Great post.

I’ve been the complete opposite in regard to your story about realizing the road probably wasn’t meant for you. I stupidly allowed my father to fill my head full of shit like “You never get to have a comfortable life, you’re always traveling, always away from family, even in the best situations your life is a compromise in comparison to everyone else”

Once I got to probably my mid-30’s and thought about that I kicked myself in the balls for listening; life was never comfortable to begin with. Wasn’t comfortable through my 20’s, sleeping on people’s couches most of the time barely having money to get me through that particular day. I’ve got zero connection to my family on account of them being insane and/or too spread out/distant and I’ve compromised every single day I’ve gone to work at something that wasn’t music-related, which was often times working with the general public who felt positioned to shit on me because I was a server or whatever in a restaurant.

I mentioned that to him at one point and he agreed, saying “Yeah, looking back it’s hard to deny that you weren’t essentially raised to live that kind of life. Sorry about that”

I wonder is Zack Wylde will join Mastodon now. He seems to be the replacement for dead rock stars. He kinda sounds like Brent too.

I mean, he actually IS better suited than so many others being that he actually, at one point anyway, incorporated some chicken picking and country licks in metal. I think he’s way too ‘Zakk’ at this point though. Ian Thornley probably would have been my top choice; replace all those Ozzy-esque vocals with Cornell-like wailing and I wouldn’t even think about the guitar playing, Ian would just kill it because he’s Ian.

I was happy to hear a tune from their show in Alaska after Brent’s passing and it seems Nick is putting some effort into the solos now, not doing them note for note but is trying to stay within the bound of what Brent did and not just mindless legato shred bullshit, hope to see a lot more effort in that area moving forward. I’d probably be kicked out of a show if I went to one and heard the shred noodles instead of something that actually fit the songs.
