i was originally looking at TV Jones Classic to brighten up my hagstrom viking, but they are just too much money (there
s a great video on youtube, search for "tv jones AGL" and watch the part after the bg track kicks in).

anyway, at the top of my list are the seymour duncan phat cats. i don't care about perfectly nailing a particular sound, i just want something brighter, clearer that sounds good. anybody with experience with the phat cats or anything else i should look at, like GFS Memphis or anything?

I have a set of the GFS Retrotron Memphis, the Alnico II models.

They are incredible. They far exceeded my expectations. I would pay at LEAST double the price for those pickups, if not more. Great tone.

The Fat Cats are P90s, which are grindy and cool sounding. Not sure of the sparkle factor in them though.

If you are looking for a true humbucker, give the Duncan Pearly Gates a try

hmm.... i had a dream90 set and they were pretty good. the phat cats, at least on seymour's site, sound way more single-coil-esque, open and sparkly, than the typical high-mid pinch of a p90.

it is probably down to the memphis and phat cats for me.

you got any clips of the memphis'?

i have never heard one in person. they look good on paper, but i want something clearer than a humbucker tone

You have described the Bareknuckle VHII to a T. Very bright, clear, yet warm. Best clean 'bucker I've used, though if you want a lot of bottom end, this pickup isn't it. Glassy is the word I'd use to describe it.
