Hey, Mesa user, do you think it's possible to achive the "brown sound" with a rectifier? How would you set it up?

You talking about the breakdown in Panama where the tone is so chewy and warm? The parts under Dave saying "reach down between my legs, ease the seat back"?

You can get close with your Rectoverb. I was hanging with this young band, helping them with tones and tunes. Kid had a 1x12 Rectoverb combo. He had it set so it sounded terrible. About ten minutes tweaking it and I had an amazing fat, warm blooming tone. They were all shocked.

I'd say, close. It is a Marshall characteristic that stems from the mids, but you can get close.

I could get about halfway there with my recto. But it had Friedman mods and KT77s. In stock form I'd say no. The electrodyne, Stiletto and RA are the Boogie's that'll get u close.

You can brown out a Dual Recto using the built in variac, but it's a totally different vibe than EVH's classic brown sound.

System of a Down's Toxicity (album) has sagged and browned out Recto tones all over it.

My best EVH tones have been with a Triple Recto, and i've even spent lots of money chasing the EVH tones.

I'm a terrible player, but i never came close using the same stuff he did.

i tried with my TREMOVERB with EL34s and 6L6s.didnt even come close, with my Stiletto Deuce ll i come a lot closer.

My Racto Gets pretty brown with an EQ in the loop and another one out front both boosting the upper mids.

I've gotten very close with my old 2 channel Dual Rectifier. If you spend time with them, they can be very rewarding in return, you'd be surprised.

I landed a Wolfgang recently...I fell like I can get that cool dirty vibe all day long with any amp, I think the magic is in the pickups, very unique sounds
