Buy an unloaded 212, or sell speakers... Help me decide!

Thinking about dropping a pair of K100s in my Orange 4x12 cab which will leave me with a pair of V30s sitting on my shelf.

My initial thought is to find a nice 212 closed back cab so that in the event that I do go jam somewhere, I do not have to haul my 412 around. My other thought was sell these things and make some cash...

What options are out there other than Mojo and Avatar for an unloaded closed back 2x12 cabinet? I've looked around a bit and really am not finding much.

Thanks

I’d hold on to those speakers and just keep an eye out for a used 212 cab. The Mesa 212 or an old VHT are both rock solid choices.

+1 - That's what I was thinking, too. You can find some great deals on really clean used cabs if you keep an eye out.

That's kinda what I am leaning towards but it's so hard to find a good clean cab that's unloaded. I like my stuff to be pretty much perfect condition.

Why would it have to be unloaded? For instance, older Fender cabs (10+ yrs old) can be found clean and don't always have good speakers in them (or may have speakers that a collector would be interested in). Maybe try to find a cab with something other than V30s in it, like the VHT 2x12s, that I believe come with PE50s (not sure). That way, you can load yours into the cab and then off-load the other speakers. Even an old Mesa 2x12 with V30s, you can find them well taken care of but with worn out V30s.

It is possible to find unloaded cabs, too, but patience is really the key in all of this. E-bay, Reverb, small builders, etc. Just keep looking and you'll find something that will work and be less expensive than a new Mojo or Avatar. Maybe you'll find a different speaker that you like (VHT PE50s are supposed to be really good, but I don't have any first hand experience with those), too, or blends well with your V30s. I've found dead mint Orange PPC212s for $300 recently. I know those have V30s, too, but then you'd have a 2x12 and could sell 2 of the V30s to help offset the cost.

As an aside, almost all of the cabs I have, I've bought used and replaced the speakers in them. It took me years to find them, but I have a price I'm willing to pay and a condition they must be in before I'll consider one. I have places that I check once every day or two, and when one comes up, I'll buy it. Sometimes, it doesn't take long, sometimes, it takes months, but eventually, something will come up.

If you don't mind me asking, what price range are you looking at? I'm asking because I'm currently looking at cabinets, and if I find something, I could let you know, if you'd like.

It's buyers market right now for speakers and cabinets. keep'em and find a cab

Get a new, unloaded Seismic cab on eBay (free shipping). They're made with Baltic Birch. I have one, put a pair of 75s in it, and it's my band practice space cab. It sounds great and it won't break my heart if it gets stolen.

Yeah I’d keep em too. I have a stack of about 8 speakers and every few years it’s fun to swap them around.

I've had my finger on the "purchase button" (for a Seismic) many times over the past couple years...but never actually hit it. I've read they're cheaply made, but have also read they're very dependable sounding, but not something you'd want to move repeatedly. :dunno:

I agree with others...if you like them v30's, get a used cab, loaded if need be, and drop in the v30's. Personally I love the evh 212's, and they're pretty readily available at good used prices. And you could sell those speakers and recoup some of your cost for the cab. Just my .02.

Not mine. I've hauled it to countless band jams and practice spaces. It's totally solid. Had the jack nut come loose, but I had fussed with it before. Had a bad solder joint, but that was probably my fault too. Totally solid, well-built and sounds great. I don't need any more, but wouldn't hesitate to buy another.

FWIW, my Avatar signature 212 is my favorite sounding cab that I have owned. Unloaded, you can find pretty decent deals on them. Hell, they were even doing $350 shipped for brand new contemporary 212s with V30s a little bit ago.

I actually considered buying an Avatar 212 Contemporary loaded with K100s, and then just swapping the speakers around.
