This was a transaction on The Gear Page.
Send the buyer the amp. He praised me on the packing job and how mint looking the amp is.
He then starts up telling me it doesn't sound right. Then he says he got a great tone out of it and maybe
because he has never owned a Plexi style amp, that his playing skills are not up to par.
He wants a refund???
Here is one of the MANY PM's between us ;

hi again
youre probably sick of these messages by now, but i thought Id mention my progress today. i did in fact manage to coax some great tones out of the soultone tonight, and i might have also figured out why a modern marshall is far removed from a vintage plexi or superbass.
i borrowed an old boss compressor pedal, and along with the ds-1 that most definitely did the trick. it was a jaw dropping difference actually.

so maybe because there is so little preamp gain in these things they are just super open and uncompressed. makes for a huge pure tone for sure, but wow, sooo hard to play a legato line. its like the amp was fighting me, or forcing me to have better technique.. and unfortunately im too old to relearn how to play guitar, so its looks like ill be looking for a good compressor.
the amp DOES have a great classic sound to it when dialed in properly, and although i dont know if its a keeper or not, at least now i see some potential here.

So he's still asking for a refund? I'm a "you bought you own it" kind of guy when it comes to used gear in a private transaction... a rule I apply to MYSELF as well...unless there was a specific return policy offered. I guess the only thing you have to worry about is a PayPal dispute (assuming that's how he paid).

Unless it was damaged or you misrepresented the condition of the amp (which you obviously did not do) he shouldn't be looking for a refund and you're under no obligation to provide simply because it doesn't work for him.

I mean really?? This isn't Guitar Center. Sorry you bought an amp that you don't dig. That dude is ridiculous. Where does he live? North Dakota or somewhere desolate?

There are some weird people out there. Don't let him try and make you feel bad. It's his amp now and that's all there is to it.

Wow. Don't even know what to say.

I had a similar issue years ago - I had a trade for a few Yamaha Pacificas (921's) I owned for some amp stuff. The guy gets them, and says, "These aren't made in USA". Really? No shit? They're YAMAHAS for F's SAKE!! I never would've have represented them as a USA guitar. Idiot... Ended up having to BUY BACK one of the items I dumped at MGR (lost about $200 there), returnm some stuff to GC that supported the gear I got from him, and had to ship everything back & forth - TWICE. Unbelievable. Luckily, I'm a good guy...I think.

How is someone too old to learn to play all over again, but somehow never played a Plexi style amp?

Seems to me (based on the message you posted) that he's feeling a bit foolish, and looking for reassurance.

As far as a refund goes, I'd be polite, but firm; not your fault he didn't understand what he was purchasing.

Be thankful he isn't trying to make up some "issue", to secure a refund. :D

No dude. Went through this over Christmas...sold dude a guitar. Nothing wrong with it or the transaction. Dude gets it, praises the pack job and how fast I shipped, but wants to return it as he just doesn't like the guitar. Not my problem. The FS ad had a ton of pics and I took about 50 more for him during the pre-buy questioning. Every single thing was discussed, and I accepted payment and shipped next day.

Guitar shows up in good shape, he owns it. I found out a few days later he's been booted from a few forums/FB groups for doing this. Like said above, be polite but firm. We need to stop this shit. The people that think they're buying from GC or something need to know that's not the case. Private sales are exactly that; SALES. You'd never try to return something you bought at a garage sale. Just no.

...OHHHH but he is raising issues. Says the amp doesn't sound right. And he's been playing since 1984 and knows what an amp should sound like.
In on message he says he cant get it to sound right. Then another says with pedals in front it's killer tone wise.
Now he says the amp just sounds like shit.
As the title on the thread states, "Buyers Remorse"

He wants to sell it but can't because he would never sell an amp that sounds this bad to anyone else.

We did use PayPal for the money transaction.
I called them.
They said unless the item was misrepresented he doesn't have much to go on.
Plus I have all the transaction pm's saved and will forward to PayPal if this get's disputed.

If this goes to his favor, trust me,I will not hesitate to let the music forums know who he is.

I'm trying to be civil but when you get "wishy washy" and say your playing technique doesn't sound good through a non forgiving amp.....NOT MY PROBLEM.

Dude what? I have no words. Tell him to sell it if he really doesn't like it, you know...like a normal person.

Changes everything....tell him to kick rocks, and go on about your day.

You should out the fucker, irrespective of him filing a dispute; save everyone else the ass beating of selling something to the clown.

Exactly. It's not your problem. I think you should out him regardless so no one else has to deal with his BS.

that is messed up dude, you should give him his money back!! if you sold him an amp that sounds like shit, he should get a refund!! just kidding man!! obviously he has buyers remorse and is looking for any reason at all to send the amp back. you did not misrepresent the amp, so tell him to deal with it. if I buy an amp and it is not my thing, I would not try to get a refund. I would just sell it. he doesn't want to deal with that it looks like. what a dick.

Sounds like a little bitch. Definitely don't get a refund for that.

gimmie a F***ing break. amp recieved as described, transaction over.!

Does he know what that amp is 'supposed to' sound like? Or is there some pixie in his ear telling him that when he plugs in he'll automatically be transformed to Rock God status?

I always thought that anytime you bought a used tube amp it was pretty common practice to replace all the tubes, and give it a once through?

Came back to read this again and got pissed all over again.

Dude should have done his homework on what that amp was going to sound like BEFORE he purchased it and decided if it was for him. That's what fuckin GC is for, not good dudes on forums trying to get their trade/sale on...assholes that treat private sales like there's an implied return policy if you 'just don't like it' hack me the fuck off.

You said you kept all the PMs so far and it sounds like you're cool as far as PP goes....I'd send him one more msg telling him whatever problems he has are his problems and cut out. No reason for you to keep holding this guy's hand.

You bought it, played it, obviously decided it wasn't for you and sold it. He can do the same fuckin thing.

That buyer needs to suck it up, he paid used money for a used item and got to try it out at his leisure in his home with his cabinets instead of at a noisy music store, If he doesn't like the tones or feel of the amp that's 100% on him.
