Buying my first quality amp

Does anyone have any videos or clips of them playing the EVH 5150w plugged straight into the amp?

 buy used from Guitar center 30 day return policy it keeps you   :) and not

I have an EVH 100 watt. Granted right now I'm waiting on a new power transformer, but this is the first non tube related issue. I've owned and gigged with the amp for four years. I just did a show with a borrowed 50 watt head. Sounded great. I should mention that my transformer issue was caused by bad power. We were getting 130VAC through the wall.

With that said, you could buy a used JCM 2000 DSL for less and cover the same ground.

If you really need just one channel, that's what I would get. I've heard so many stories of 5153's being unreliable, that I would tend to look elsewhere. I'd make sure to get a quality cab. I tend to prefer 4x12's with vintage 30's, as nothing sounds as good to my ears. Also, the volume difference between a 505 and 100 watt head is minimal, so I wouldn't rule out 100 watt heads based on that. 100 watter's tend to have more headroom, but that may not be an issue for you.

I would take a hard look at the 50w Peters Chimera in the classifieds right now. It's not much more than the 5153 and I think its tones would more than satisfy. Good luck in your quest!

the evh 5153 50 watt sounds good and will probably be just fine for you. I think a better bang for the buck and a better sound (but a larger package and footprint) is a used marshall dsl100 and used 4x12 cab.

but either would be fine for you from what you describe...

I'm a plug and play kind of guy. I hate pedals with a passion. I hate using them onstage and hate watching guitarists who use them. I'm looking for a modern amp that I won't have to do a bunch of shit to or run a bunch of shit through it to get the high gain saturated tone I'm needing. I know the jcms are great, but it just seems like the amp alone wouldn't give me the ballpark tone I need. Granted I'm sure I will run some kind of effects through the effects loop if I pick up the 5153 like delay or reverb, but I don't often switch channels or effects. Most sounds I do are with my hands so I really just need that one good distortion tone. I don't differentiate between rhythm and lead sound, I use the same setting for both. My tone is always wet and gainy. I don't add boost for soloing etc.

In that case really save some money and at the same time get exactly what you're asking for. Get a 5150/6505 and be done with it. You can usually find a head and cab on Craigslist for $600-1000 depending on condition. They're terrific deals and it's exactly what you want.

Definitely this...if you can swing up into the 1500 range there are some serious amps that are killer and need no boosting....I thought there were quite a few here in the classifieds.

There's an "EVH tone lounge" thread somewhere here on RT. Read the last few pages. Talks about guys having problems. If you do buy one my advice is CHANGE all tubes. Invest in some used but test strong older tubes...both power and pre. The new production tubes today have terrible reliability. Just42dave here on RT sells tubes? Or Laura at valve queen. Trust them to set you up.

why would you buy used tubes thats stupid thats like buying used light bulbs... why not just take your amp to a tech and theyl help you pick tubes right for your amp and what you do with it and test and select them.. you cant just buy tubes =p well i mean... you can tho. ay dog.. i give you a dolla fo dat light bulb... yeh..... any good?
well...... i mean.. idk.... its been in the bathroom for a while now... i guess its pretty bright still....
aight thanks dog.. them new light bulbs them aint no good no more knaw sayin?

Marshall DSL-100H is great all around amp. Has pretty much all the rock and metal tones covered and is very affordable.

If it's your first tube amp, i'd reccomend taking no online advice to the bank. Driving to every store you can make it to and jam everything in your range and close to it. No substitue for listening to it your self espcially whe you don't have many amp flavors in your head to compare to.

This times 1000!!!!

Everyone on here rants and raves on the 5153. While the 5153 sounded good, I liked my krank rev+ better (would be a great suggestion). Ask other gear heads to try their stuff out, go to shops and be the dick who tests amps to loud, and make sure your making use of a good cabinet as well. The cab will alter your tone greatly. Also, bring your guitar when your trying amps out.

but if you looking for a list of amps try:
5150,5150 II ( not everyones cup of tea, but you might like the II)
6505,6505+
JVM 205H
Mesa boogie dual rec, 2 or 3 channel
Jcm 2000,800,900 dsl or tsl
Egnater TOL

All of these can be had at great deals if you buy used, and you can probably trade up/retain their cash value if you decide you've outgrown them.

Best of luck !

Yes buy some Used or n.o.s tubes Tungsram,RFT,Mullard,Amperex,Raytheon and experiment with them.

What are you, 15?? New production tubes are for the most part shit. EBay and other sources have older power and preamp tubes that have been used but test strong and are 100x better than that shit that passes for new tubes nowadays. Half the problems that new tube amps have are from new tubes that are junk. They test them, match them up....and shit the bed at a gig. I have a collection of tubes and all of them are older used but still test close to new. I'm talking Winged Cs, Siemens, Mullard, Chinese 8th/9th gen, tungsram etc. I haven't bought new production tubes since the 'new' preamp tubes in one of my EVHs were bad. I bought a matched pair of KT88s for a VHT....one went bad after 2 fn hours!! Never had a problem with the good 'used' tubes I have. Not one. So you go ahead and buy the new shit tubes. I'll stick with my old lightbulbs.

alright you wana buy some old half dead mullards i got you man ill hook you up

In all seriousness I've never had one of my used but 'strong' tubes go bad. But I've had 3 amps give me problems, one twice. The first EVH 5153 50 I had cut out here and there. Brand new amp, new preamp tubes. Shit tubes. Threw in some Chinese Bs in there and sounded better and no more cutting out. Had a Marshall VM and at a gig it had no sound in the middle of the set. Changed out ALL tubes and problem solved. All Marshall labeled new production tubes. A pair of brand new KT88s. One redplated immediately so another shit new production tube. So my experience is newer tubes are shit and I don't trust them. I won't pay for NOS prices but there are deals to be had on used tubes, I paid 20 bucks for a pair of Siemens el34s that I've used for numerous gigs and sound as good as Winged Cs to me in my Marshalls. I paid 30 bucks for a lot of 12ax7s that had 7 Chinese, 2 RCAs, 2 Tungsrams....all have been reliable. I bought a bias rite and do my own biasing so no tech needed so far. Some guys have had better luck with new tubes and good for them. Me, I'll stick with my cheapo used vintage tubes.
