If given a choice with no concern for cost… would you rather have a 1 4x12, 2 2x12’s, 4 1x12s ? Speakers of choice….
The question is what really sounds better ? And if you had 4 1x12s stacked like 1 4x12, could we really tell the difference? Obviously separating the 1x12s for stereo is a bit more versatile but maybe more cumbersome on travel? Interaction of speakers within a single box vs multiple boxes etc…. I think you get my gist….

I've never hooked up four 1x12s but have used pairs of 2x12s and of course 4x12s.

Apples to apples is hard because all these things are constructed differently and different speakers of the same type will all sound a bit different.

Two stacked 2x12s sounds fine. I guess I prefer the sound of just one 4x12, but generally I prefer slants and that's going to be hard to replicate with stacked up 2x12s. And a pair of 2x12s on the floor just is not the same as a 4x12. It's missing something. Doesn't seem as warm or thick or however you'd want to describe it.
