Cabs and Speakers oh my! New band!

Hey guys...just curious to see if you all think this is a good set up for this band I am in? We have only had one practice and I used the studio gear at the time. It is a 90s cover band.

My amps are 20th Ann Bogner Shiva with EL34s and PWE Event Horizon plus I am picking uip a Mesa Boogie Rectoverb.
Cabs are Bogner 212OS, Stone Age 212C and Port City 212OS.

Current set up although the Stone Age is in progress. Guiatsr are all LPs, SGs and PRS CE-22.

The problem when I played a practice with two M75s is everyone complained my tone was too dark! The M75s are a bad match alone with a Bogner!

So far we are a 3 piece and looking for a dedicated bassist. The singer plays guitar and plays bass. Right now he is playing bass although he and i work well together as dual guitarists in a band. Right now his rig is a 50 watt Line 6 Spider. He is buying my THD 212 cab with Classic Lead 80s and is looking at a used, inexpensive Marshall or Egnater and pedals.

Exactly! Or how you flavor the song. FWIW I was playing knockin on Heavens Door with overdrive a few years before GnR came out with it. My bass player who was kinda teaching me guitar also said no one would want to hear it that way Don't be afraid to play it your way.

Probably info you are already aware of but for live/rehearsal use, you are going to want a brighter, more mid focused tone to cut through. That thick heavy, mid scooped tone that sounds great in the bedroom will be muffled and lost in a live sound situation. Any of the amps you have will do it and do it well, but you may have to change your approach to eq. You've got some great gear. Not trying to be smarty, you are probably already well aware of this. I'd try adjusting the tone knobs with your eyes closed, or do the zakk wylde approach and turn all of the eq knobs wide open and then cut back on whatever is coming through too much. You might be suprised how much your tone settings differ from settings that might sound good at home. See my location under my avatar.

In terms of specific gear for this project based on the set list you listed, I'd sell all of your gear. Then get the worst playing fender jaguar or mustang you can find and run a boss DS-1 into a portable radio/cd player.

Seriously, any of your stuff would work great. I'd probably use the shiva. Can't really comment on the cabs without hearing them in person.

Yep, I am 42 years old and gigged plenty of times, I hate scooped tones.....but the other guitarist is younger and he often says I have too many mids in my tone. I never have my Bogner or PWE above noon on the mids.

Actually I don't find the Rectifier to be mid scooped anyway, actually the opposite. Any Recto I owned had crazy, crazy mids! Almost too much midrange. My previous Reborn Dual Rectifier had one of the best classic rock tones I have ever gotten, preiod so they are versatile amps, they just don't solo well.....other than the Rectoverb and Tremoverb.

Trust me, I have tried t get those big, wide rectifier tones with my amps, but can't really match the bigness and aggression of the Dual Rectifiers I have owned.

Both of my amps sound great for this stuff. One thing I really liked about the early grunge movement is the great gear those guys use, old vintage Marshalls, Fenders and Gibsons, getting back to rich, organi tones and away from the 80s metal I hated. LOL...I was a big Pearl Jam fan, Alice in Chains, STP and SoundGarden. Lots of Marshalls, JCM 800s, Plexis and Kim of SG was a huge Tremoverb guy. Dean of STP is big on vintage Gibsons, he has some killer 1978 LPs and nice Marshalls. Serious tone hounds they were! The only band I was not big into was Nirvana. Jerry Cantrell big LP, G&L and Marshall, Bogner and Mesa Boogie guy. His JCM 800 was heavily modded by Bogner.

I have to stop sounding like an idot with this stuff. I have some gear I know some local guys would kill for and I should be happy.

I would use the Shiva and Bogner 212 os.

I used a combo fender twin many moons ago and that was loud enough. My friend used a Dean Markley 60 watter or 120 watter combo and played to 500-600 people outside and was plenty loud.

Your playing will be the most important thing.

Honestly dude, any one of your amps with a few pedals here and there should cover virtually any ground you need to cover. Same with the cabs. Choose "your" favorite combination of head and cab...plus a backup head for live use and your good to go.

Like someone said above...listening to other bandmates about tone usually takes you down the wrong path. It's okay to take advice...we all do but when a guy with a Line 6 is telling you you've got to much mids...take that for what it's worth. Besides...they've already said it was too dark and he said you had too much mids...think about that.

With a set list like that...use your guitars for your different tonal & tuning varieties and choose a set amp and cab. If not you'll constantly be chasing things and not concentrating on what your supposed to be doing in the first place...the music.

Good stuff guys! Thanks for the pep talk. I am going to go that route. Even though the Shiva is more Marshall than Mesa....with the switch in...I was able to keep it there an entire practice and it sounded great, I pumped up the presence and treble and bass and got some good Rectifier type tone, not quite as big but plenty passable! We played some Godsmack and Creed and it sounded brutal.

On the dark comments by my singer/guitarist, I was using an Ear Candy 212 at the time with dark speakers so I know that was a big part of it. My Bogner semi open slot back and V30s sounds massive and full and sits in the mix well!

I am picking up a used Mesa Electradyne because I just LOVE that amp and it takes pedals like a champ. Also a Stone age 212C semi open back with Celestion creambacks and a Port City 212 with Celestion Lynchbacks.
