So, I purchased a Wizard amp from Rick back in 2009 - Canada. I got a letter today from the Ca. State Board of Equalization saying I owe them a tax for using a product not made in the USA. This is above sale tax and import fees. WTF! 4 years after that enact a tax? That should kill Diezel/Wizard/etc sales here. Between the weak dollar and all the import fees and now this. What a bunch of BS.  :gethim: :gethim:

Just wait until the bill for using Chinese products shows up.

That's one of the most moronic things I've ever heard. So CA isn't just trying to run all the businesses out of the state, they want the people gone too.

If you don't mind sharing, what are they trying to soak you for?

Our system of gov't is a jacked up mess. Let's penalize citizens for spending their hard-earned money how they choose. Makes complete sense.

Their thought is, "You didn't pay CA sales tax on the purchase. We gots to get our slice."

F'ing BS. They want 8.75% of $4,600. $402 for an amp 4 years later? I don't even own the amp anymore. How do you back charge me? After shipping, import fees and now this the amp cost me close to $6k. I will probably try and fight it, but we know how that will go.

Damn. I'd be ticked off too. I vaguely remember reading an article about all this. I think Illinois does/is doing the same thing among other states.

Lemme get this straight: your state wants to tax you for using a product in the States that's not made in the States, and they're taxing you 4 years after you bought it?! Is this common practice over there to be this late to "the party" or wtf?!

Even when I'm looking at this from "the promised land of tax on tax on tax" (Finland) it seems, well, ridiculous.

Yep. Some one has to pay for all our non-citizens and gross government misspending.

I wouldn't even try to fight it. Use tax has a statute of limitations of 8 years, so you are screwed. I'm surprised it took them that long to send you a notice. A ton of my clients have been getting these lately. Most recent was one trying to register a car he bought out of state and already paid taxes on. They told him he had to pay use tax of ~$10,000 to drive it .

Wipe your ass on it and send it back. Fuck em. Obamanomics. Sun tax and Air tax coming soon. Those products have already had Federal import duties paid.

And that about sums it up. I've been paying "use tax" on stuff for years as a corporation, and private citizen. That's why I buy "parts" amps that don't work. They're not a finished good since they aren't working, hence, no tax.

Maybe I should give you my accountant's name? $215 per hour, but he knows the tax laws.

thats brilliant.

thats what he should claim....bought it in non working condition.

I remember researching the purchase a wizard and ran across the same thing. You pay a federal tax on them because they are over $5k and do not originate in the states therefore it is more along the lines of $6k after all is said and done. I remember NC being one of these states as well.

fuck it man. $500 is alot of quid to charge for something over 4 years old and no longer in possession. claim it as non working and tell them to piss off

The letter states it's in addition to Federal Import Duties. If I just don't pay it then they will add penalties and take my tax return. 8.75% exactly what the sales tax rate was at the time. Might try the non working amp thing. I wouldn't mind having to pay it at the time, if you know then that's just what it is, But 4 years later? Yeah, it was a rack amp so I could justify the price as a collector piece.
