Yep. Some one has to pay for all our non-citizens and gross government misspending.

And that about sums it up. I've been paying "use tax" on stuff for years as a corporation, and private citizen. That's why I buy "parts" amps that don't work. They're not a finished good since they aren't working, hence, no tax.

Maybe I should give you my accountant's name? $215 per hour, but he knows the tax laws.

Wonder about the "use tax" on whiskey from Canada, weed from Columbia and coke from Afghanistan?

they WILL take your tax return though, if you dont pay it. or, their part.

Obamanomics.

That is hilarious. CA use tax became law in 1935! Under a republican governor no less!

Well, purchased lots of gear from up north and over seas directly - first time it's been enforced.

Lemme get this straight: your state wants to tax you for using a product in the States that's not made in the States, and they're taxing you 4 years after you bought it?! Is this common practice over there to be this late to "the party" or wtf?!

Even when I'm looking at this from "the promised land of tax on tax on tax" (Finland) it seems, well, ridiculous.

Yep. Some one has to pay for all our non-citizens and gross government misspending.

The sad thing is, not one of us here or anywhere else in the USA will do anything other than complain about it. The government has become the elite ruling class and we support them.

Oh, I agree that it sucks ass, don't get me wrong.  Just has nothing to do with the Federal government or the President. State law, passed bt the State, enforced by the State.

One would think that the Cali state legislature would have a few muzo's on seat that would not allow this to happen....

In all seriousness though, this is a tax law that if Cali so chose to use it to its extent would be massive. Same can be said for imports from China, auto's and other massive amounts of stuff that one "uses". Looks like a desperate move to bail the state out of the muck.

I'm just glad I didn't buy my commode from Canada - I get a lot of use out of that :D

Agreed fully. CA always seems to be in a budget crisis. Or Power. Or water. Or... :D

Yeah, all this when an Alameda County (in CA) Administrator gets a pension of $432,000 per yr guaranteed for the rest of her bitch life.

The thing with the use tax is that they really have no way of knowing (except cars and boats that you have to register). My guess is either the retailer got audited (unlikely) or they picked the info up from Customs.........

Sorry dude. That sucks major ass. I'd ask an accountant if there is a statute of limitations on that. If not, you can always try to settle for a lesser amount.

California has the highest state tax rate in the Country now! And it doesn't matter how much they tax you, they'll aways have a budget problem, not just becausw the waste money, but because they have negotiated ridiculous retirement packages from union workers and state workers and we 're all paying for them to retire like kings, while we have to bust our asses to pay these huge tax increases! The state has no clue how they're going to be able to pay for it! I'm sure they'll find a way to tax the internet or toilet paper, etc. Next time you look at your electric bill, look at the fees that nobody has a clue what they are about! And I'm sure more tax increases are coming! F...king crooks!

Louisiana has a similar tax. When I moved there I brought my 1970 Chevelle with me and when I registered it they looked it up and said it was worth $22k and I had to pay something like 3% or 4% road use tax on it. WTF? I told them I was the 5th owner of the car, that means sales tax has already been paid on the thing 5 times and now I have to pay a use tax.I went round and round with them, I ended up showing them documentation that I paid $1200 for it in 1987 and they charged me the tax based on what I paid instead of the current value. They also charged me the tax on my the two other daily drivers we brought with us.

SteveK...that cartoon you posted pretty much sums it up... it could also say "Illegal or Legislated?".

I am trying to think of other 'use taxes.' Property tax and license feed on cars are the main ones that comes to mind.

So, I purchased a Wizard amp from Rick back in 2009 - Canada. I got a letter today from the Ca. State Board of Equalization saying I owe them a tax for using a product not made in the USA. This is above sale tax and import fees. WTF! 4 years after that enact a tax? That should kill Diezel/Wizard/etc sales here. Between the weak dollar and all the import fees and now this. What a bunch of BS.  :gethim: :gethim:

This happened to one of my clients, he got an invoice 2 years after purchasing some items from me, with penalties for not paying on time. I looked into it for him and here's the deal, it's not a new law and you have to report these purchases on your tax returns otherwise you may have to pay penalties and interest. The puzzling thing is that it's applied randomly and the info is provided to them by the shipping company. I managed to have the penalties removed but he still had to pay the tax. Oh yeah, it also applies to all products coming into California from out of state, not just a foreign country.
