Eric Johnson is a muscial genius. I just watched EJ live from Austin City Limits '88 for the umpteenth time and it never fails to drop my jaw. The guy has it all; Chops, Voice, incredible songwriting and compositional skill. Everything about him is so unique and original IMHO I truly believe ( and hope) that when people look back in 20+ years , he is remembered as one of the all time greats, up there with the likes of Jimi and Eddie.. This is all my opinion of course but at the risk of being flamed, I have to scratch my head if you dont agree..

His tones were off the charts in that time period as well.

Now thats what I call using incredible technique musically

He'll only be remembered as one of the greats by guitarists, not by the general population, unfortunately. VH and Hendrix had radio hits, sold more, and had songs with vocal hooks. EJ music doesn't have that mainstream appeal.

His control while playing stock plexi type amps and single coils blows me away, his rig is not forgiving and he makes it look so easy.

Also agree but in all fairness, Eric never really set out to write mainstream music. Personally, I find it very accessible and the guy did win a Grammy afterall but he was never about mainstream or pop

I also think that if Eric's music was easier to play like Jimi and Eddie's , we would see alot more EJ clones. There just arent many people out there who can come close to pulling of Eric with any kind of real conviction...

Yup, the guy has crazy control and his use of dynamics far exceeds most players that I have ever seen or heard and its all dedicated to making things as musical possible..

as soon as i see "eddie vegas" in that auction, i immediately think pawnstars.
and when i think pawnstars, i immediately picture the guitar being appraised at a fair market value...

and then i picture rick saying ="yeah, well, there's not really a market for this type of guitar owned by this certain guy...bottom line, i can give you $350 for it...i mean it is an older strat, and it's really beat up, but this is a really niche item, and i dont even know who i could sell this to"....

Fully agreed. His lead playing is so classy, whilst being technically impeccable. Fantastic phrasing, unique tone (you KNOW it's him instantly), serious speed when he needs it, great variation.

He shouldn't sing, though ;)

EJ is in his own league, also speaking of that Eddie Vegas seller on Ebay check out his inventory some time on ebay, I was checking it out about a week ago and am not sure how he sells anything at those rediculous prices. Do people really pay that much for vintage guitar stuff? he will sell you any part of a vintage guitar for about a million bucks

I love his voice Charles and I also happen to think that it fits his music perfectly. Its all good though, the whole things is in fact subjective...

My favorite DVD of all time. Watched it so many times. A true virtuoso in his prime. Those are my favorite four tones of all time on that DVD.
Kage, I also love the compositions and vocals.
I also love Tommy Taylors soaring drum grooves. He has his OWN groove.

I don't want his amps or guitars....I want his jacket. Dude was styling back in the day

The first time I heard Eric was at Met Center in Bloomington MN when he opened for Rush....Presto tour. I was so cooked on bud, and it blew me away how good he sounded, especially as a 3 piece. I instantly went out and bought Ah Via Musicom on cassette, and listed to it everyday in my car on the way to highschool.

I saw Rush on that tour in Omaha NE right after graduating from high school and I'm thinking Mr Big opened up. But I can't actually remember much about the show so maybe EJ was there as well. Those memories are just gone, I can remember most of those concerts from back then but that one is just a blank.

To me EJ is another incredible example of what can be done with a Strat. He is one of the greatest Strat players which is saying a lot.

Jim

I love those 3 tracks he does on the G3 cd, and Cliffs, other than that haven't heard a lot of his other stuff. I do have Bloom, didn't dig it too much, I'll have to give it another spin.

It's not forgiving? His rig is sauced to the gills and frankly, that makes playing a cranked stock plexi MUCH easier.

Great player, great musician, but I don't think his rig is particularly unforgiving... He also uses a variety of fuzz boxes, etc. in front of the amp...

Steve

Another great player with bad tone. :( I just don't get that rolled off kazoo thing he gets going on.

Love Eric and this show. I am also a big fan of Venus Isle too. More than anything, I love his melodic sensibilities in his playing and songwriting. Thanks for reminding me how much I like his stuff Kage!
