You're not crazy...EJ is an amazing talent. I'm in awe every time I hear and especially see him play. Thanks for reminding me about this DVD in my collection!!

Another great player with bad tone. :( I just don't get that rolled off kazoo thing he gets going on.

Hey George!!! I can see where it wouldnt be everyones cup of tea but IMHO, It fits his style and phrasing so well that I just couldnt imagine anything else. Its a perfect compliment...

This is the one that slays me...
Just shows how subjective music is because IMO, he ruined a great tune's soul with that performance.

I agree; Music is highly subjective. I happen to love his version...

Its that he recreates the backwards solo stuff so... well... well.

call me crazy....great player, great tone. i admire and respect what he has achieved he is one of the best... but.. and i'm sticking my neck out here... he kind of bores me. i can only take something that is perfect for some long. i prefer it more human than that. i like it a little rawer...on the edge, about to fall apart... not so above the belt and in ones head, if that makes sense..?... pure inspiration even if their technique isn't perfect... like i said i'm sticking my neck out but it makes for good conversation. ;)

Nah you're not crazy...that Hendrix cover video posted earlier bored me beyond belief!! I think he's talented and enjoy some of his stuff; I have an old DVD of him on G3 and think he's great on that.

I saw him live in 1990 at the Stone Pony in NJ and it was just about the best live performance I've seen from a guitar player of any style. I just wish he would have gotten a singer.

Eric is a genius IMO.

Venus Isle is my desert island disc, I could listen to that album over and over without ever getting tired of it.

I would see him at Rockafellers in Houston way back in the day. Freakin take the breath out of me! He fuckin scared me!
I have had one on one conversations for a few minutes with him two times. Once in H town and once in ATL. Class act and my hero.
"One of the most respected guitarists on the planet."

Jeff Van Zandt, awesome tech and super cool dude.

Fred Bonte was his man in the beginning and knows his shit, ask Bob Bradshaw.
This picture was not on Google till I posted on F Book.

I think he's amazing. Musically he runs circle around so many other players who have way less chops than him.

Its all good Mark, we all have preferences and things that we look for when it comes to music. For me, the first couple of Vinnie Moore albums elicit the same response. I dont find any of that with EJ at all personally, I hear and feel so much emotion and humanity oozing out of everything that he does.

Hell, as much as I love the guy, I dont want to listen to him alll of the time either. I need to hear raw, piss and vinegar players like Gary Moore or Angus Young as well..

I love his playing but I never was able to get on board with his lead tone. His clean tone is amazing but that flute-like lead tone just bothers me...it essentially takes all the "Stratiness" away from his Strat. It almost sounds the same when he switches to a 335 which is indicative of a rig that overtakes the source instrument's inherent tone.

What he's done with the pentatonic scale is unsurpassed IMO...I've never heard another player get that kind of mileage out of it. A true master of phrasing, technique, and composition.

I'm a huge fan of technical players and the best word I can use to describe EJ's clean and violin tone is "ethereal". There was one night when I was actually playing "Cliffs of Dover" note for note, and then I woke up and was crushed with despair when I realized I would never reach that level no matter how much time I invest practicing. Nevertheless, I will still give it my best shot. There are so many songs of his that I listen to and think, "I wish I could play and sound like that". Goddamnit, it takes me like 10 minutes just to get though "East Wes". What's so appealing to me is that he's Rock, Jazz, and Blues in one awesome package.

Here's one of my favorite tracks off of his newest album.

And here's him playing his Strats through his pedalboard and tweed Champ (I bought my reissue because every famous guitarist seems to have one laying around for practice). Whaddya know? He sound like Eric Johnson :D

ej was capable of powerful musical moments and his tone is huge live.
there's a reason monsters like bonnomassa, gales, and lane pinched his lines note for note.

his newer stuff lost the charm for me, but his ACL performances and ah via musicom coach house performance i saw won't be forgotten. i caught him later that tour on a big stage with satch and it wasn't the same. saw him on the first g3 tour and it was snoozers. saw him at galaxy on bloom tour...no magic except he played wind cries mary on piano and that was cool.
i have his live at anaheim dvd and it's weak.

his live playing zenithed from tones to ah via and maybe here and there on venus.

Love EJ but as I told Kage, some of the most off the charts playing I ever heard from him is a few 1994 Alien Love Child shows. It's like ACL X 10 playing many covers as well. I'll have to try and dig it up and put it on YT

I LOVE the Alien Love Child album and have seen some of the live shows. He was incredible during that era as well.

Oh, and someone said all his guitars sound the same through his rig. You're not listening very well. When he plugs in his 335 (Last House on the Block) his tone is so fat it steamrolls. Edgier crunch with the SG and Les Paul.

I find it difficult to believe someone cannot hear the difference.
