fellas picked up a 1988 2203 and want to do a recap on it . I ordered a set of F&T filter caps along with bias caps.

1. How long do the board caps last ( coupling caps etc) should replace those as well? I have built a few 800 kits from new parts but don't know much along the lines of how long components last . Lmk fellas (guys that know please) . I'm also changing the screen grid resistors putting 1k 5 watt.

Coupling caps can last for decades. No need to change those unless they are leaking dc.

Thanks man .

Just do all can caps and bias caps. I have done a bunch of cap jobs. I really like the ARS caps over the F&T in the Marshalls

Any electrolytic cap in any electronic device is suspect after many years, but ceramic discs or other types should be fine.

Cool guys thx I went with F&T I here they are the real deal . Got them on the way. This is my first PCB amp i built a few PTP 2203 type amps guess I need to learn how to read schematics now lol.

1988 Marshall will have LCR caps. The ARS are much closer to the LCR caps. F&T are not the real deal.

I agree with glip, F&T are good caps but the ARS are more appropriate for a Marshall.

If the caps are anything like the tube brands ARS are JJ caps I believe. I can't stand anything JJ every JJ power tube I have ever had gave me shit, I don't give JJ products a chance in anything any more . Ill be happy with the F&T caps I'm sure I spoke to a few guys that went from LCR caps to F&T and they said nothing changed in tone That's why I decided on those .

Thanks for the input though guys

Could be wrong on the ars thing though. aRS tubes are relabeled JJ tubes though.

Use the F&T but ARS are better and not JJ's. :salute:

Better is opinion at best . Tone is hard to describe like blondes vs red heads , shaved vs waxed ;)

Maybe I'll try the ars also in another build its prob not a night and day differers anyhow I don't even think filter caps effect tone any how.

Every big Marshall guy/tech said F&T all the way . Jerry P said that also. That's what I got I'm sure it will be fine . aRS is a company that just relables other people's tubes and caps I wonder what they REALLY are?

There's allot of discussion about whether filter caps will have an effect on your tone. Two camps so to speak. Both agreeing that there will be noticeable differencesin your punch, lows, and noise level of the amp if caps are worn and replaced with new. I have done cap jobs and there did not seem to be allot of difference and I have done some where there were big differences. The ARS caps just seem real to my ears. They seem to not add anything to what the amp should sound like. I hear more depth to the tone, richness. With that said I did some AB comparisons, clipping in the F&T and the ARS and the former sounded best. It was very clear to me the F&T added a graininess to the sound. Now I have used F&T before without comparing and they sounded ok to me. Once I compared the ARS and F&T back to back I decided I am sticking with ARS in Marshall or Marshall type amps. Plus they look correct instead of those nubbies
