Can a Bogner Shiva get me here?

I'm currently amp- less and chasing tone so as a result, I'm trying to make a decision on an amplifier. The problem is, I'm in a part of the country where selection is pretty limited so I can't test drive some of my prime interests. I sold my Soldano HR 100+ to a buddy because it just wasn't giving me what I'm after. Im toying with trying to find a Shiva, but like I said: it's hard to find a spot to test them around here.

What I'm after is a head that'll get me close Ian Thornley's live tone and some of the studio stuff. Not looking for exact here, but I love the sound of his leads and his cleans have just enough spank with a fair bit of chunkiness. Here are some examples of the leads/rhythms/cleans I'm after.

(From about 6:10)

I know he's using a Bones and a SLO live, but I'm leaning towards a Bogner Shiva with some sort of boost because the Bones & SLO are way out of my price range. Plus, I like a lot of the Shiva clips I've heard and they tend pop up on the used market from time to time around here.

For those that have played one/own one, could you help me out and tell me if this will cover my bases? Any advice is welcome.

Cheers guys

probably the shiva with 6l6's should do that
the el34 sounds even better, from everything I hear

It'll do it all and then some. Just use your ears instead of eyes to dial it in. I get really really close to facelift ones when I want.

I just recently got an older EL34 Shiva w/reverb and I can't stress enough of how great of an amp the Shiva is. I am honeymooning right now, but I think it is easily the best sounding amp I have ever owned. It is not a high gain beast, but it has the best clean I have ever had on an amp, and the Drive channel is thick modded 800 type tones with insane clarity. I could see it doing Big Wreck tones in spades.

Yeah I think you could get there. I would go with an EL34 Shiva.

Ian's a great player and sure knows how to dial in some killer tones...

It's an el34 amp. It's juicy but still articulate. It's a lead players amp. It doesn't need a boost as it has plenty of gain.

Check out Bob Savage's purple paisley head. It is nice.

Thanks a heap for the replies guys. What's the loop like in the older Shivas? I've heard everything from "bad" to "tolerable" to "good".

Not great, even the 20th.

I find the loop to be quite good on the 20th, but I use an Egnater Loop Gadget with it.

The older Shivas loop is ridiculous. Went the rounds with Reinhold on this several years ago. No matter what I tried with changing resistor values, etc. for the fx loop cable it still sounded bad. The "traffic green" chassis revision Shiva is slightly better. This has come to be one of my pet peevs recently, if you are going to put an fx loop on your amp make it a good one instead of nearly worthless like the ones in the older Shivas. Just does not make any sense to me why they do not invest more time and effort into getting it right when it has been done with other amps.

I have an original version EL34 Shiva, and the FX loop works great for me. [shrug] Different strokes, I guess.

The Shiva was my first step into gear nirvana. It's the best 2 channel, mid gain amp around. The loop is average to good. I had no complaints myself. If you need a bit more gain on tap ( you mention the SLO which is a much higer gain amp) then find yourself a 20th Shiva for an extra 100 or 200. Assuming you are going used.
