Some how i knew you would chime in  So if you were trying to cop whitesnake/John Sykes tones to say Ratt and Lynch, which would you use the Freidman HBE or Suhr SE100?

Yeah it's awesome. Has 3 gain modes so it's like a collection of Marshall's. Or mod'ed Marshall's.

I concur!!!   If you want just want Sykes tones ala Whitesnake 1987 and Blue Murder S/T, then a Mesa Boogie Coliseum would be the amp since a majority of the tracks on those two releases were recorded with the Mesa Boogie.

I never played an Atomica but I find this odd since the three levels of gain are not really gain. It's three levels of diode clipping which is not the same as tube gain stages. I would have thought for the tones Jim wants the four gain stage would be the way to go rather than the diode clipping of a Jose inspired circuit which without the clipping is pretty low/mid gain. The Jose is a big thick tone with a smother mid compared to an Aldrich inspired circuit.

Don't waste your dough on these amps for that. Get a Mesa Mark III.

Yeah, but when done right diode clipping in combination can sound very tubelike, its hard to tell the difference.

I like a Jose circuit. It's not hard to hear diode clipping when done right. It has a very distict tone as the diodes clip the signal.
