Is this an original Peavey 5150? If it is a Peavey 5150, 6505, II or EVH 5150 III 100watt you will need something like a mini amp gizmo to change the channels via midi.
Only the 50 watt EVH 5150 III has midi channel switching built in.

The 5150 model in the current firmware is pretty good. You might tinker with it and see if that works for you through a power amp or direct.

The GSP will do exactly what you are asking.
If you set it up in the 4CM you can use your 5150 as one of the selectable preamps just the same as the ones modeled. It is basically turning your fx return into a "Power Amp In". My buddy has this exact setup with a Peavey Ultra and it works great and is 100% midi controlled. The only time you'd need an Amp Gizmo is if you wanted to use midi to switch the amp's channels.
All you have to worry about is matching the levels.

My buddy is not a member here but I believe that there are more than a few guys here with a GSP1101 that can help you out with any questions you have.
If you are the least bit intuitive when it comes to gear and read the owners manual then you should be able to set your rig up with no problems.

I use the 1101 with the 4cm method with a Orange Dark terror and it works pretty good. I just use the 1101 for clean tones and effects of course and some cabinet impulses. The trick is getting the levels matched (especially live   ). So if the clean is way to loud than I just back off the guitar vol to lower it, but if it is too low then pick harder :D

It just takes some time to get it all dialed in. When I bought mine I just downloaded and read the manual so when it showed up I could just dig in.

Been looking for a 5153 since I have heard so many good things from hanging around here when I should be working.

I plan on midi channel switching with my M9 when my 5150 50watt arrives his week, but man the 1101 is tempting especially with the floorboard.
