Can I use a 16ohm HotPlate with two 16ohm cabs?

I can't remember either, but since most of my cabs are 16 ohms and I have a 16 ohm Hotplate, I emailed Ed about it once and he told me it was fine.

I thought 2 16 ohm cabs would reduce the load to 8 ohms (assuming cabs are in parallel) and you'd need an 8 ohm hotplate. It that not right?

I think if you run 2 16 ohm cabs, set the head to 8 ohms, even with the 16 ohm hotplate. If I remember correctly, you are supposed to set the head to the lowest impedience in the chain.

Thanks guys. I know that two 16ohm cabs equals 8ohms total and to use that speaker jack on the head. I'm just asking if it's okay to have the 16ohm HotPlate in the chain instead of having to buy the 8ohm HotPlate. I just read on here recently that Ed says it's okay to use a HotPlate that's rated different than the actual load you're running, but couldn't remember if it would be okay to use a 16ohm HP with an 8ohm dealio.

Actually, I bought an 8 ohm hotplate for this exact reason (2X16 ohm cabs). I wonder if I can sell it and just use my 16 ohm hotplate, instead.

ok my opinion dont freak out. leave the head at 16 ohms / hot plate 16 ohms into the 2 16 ohm cabs = 8 ohms . it will sound ballsier. is that a word? BALLSIER germino does this with his jtm 45 clone because it is only 16 ohm like an original jtm 45 ala 1966. i also do this. 16/ 16/ 1/ 8 0hm 4/12

When I was shopping for mine, I asked similar questions. Ed said that any hotplate will work for a 1 step mismatch. Just set the head for the lowest impedence.

I could be wrong, but I thought running it like that was really hard on your output transformer.

I think your meant to use an 8ohm hotplate with the head set to 8ohms, but you can mismatch them, just the tone shaping things on the hotplate wont be very effective. I find them quite useful
