I pulled the trigger on a BROWN BEAR guitar.
It’s a Korina double cut 59 Les Paul Junior replica.
I actually purchased it direct from the owner, Jesse Brown, through his Instagram page.
From what I’ve seen on the internet, he is a very talented, up-and-coming builder in Canada.
Was wondering if anyone here has any experiences with Jesse and Brown Bear Guitars?
First off I’d like to thank Jesse Brown, for a very pleasant experience. He is a super nice guy and a very talented builder.
So, on to the guitar…..
Upon opening the case, my eyes popped out of my head!!! My nose was filled with remnants of nitrocellulose lacquer!!!
It came with 10s on it. So I had to put 9s on it. The truss rod needed to be tightened just a bit. I was able to get the neck almost perfectly straight, just the slightest bit of relief, low action and superb playability. Fretwork is perfect. I did have to adjust the bridge for intonation.
Fit and finish are great. Neck angle is perfect. Beautiful glossy finish. The wood is absolutely gorgeous and is finished in a perfectly aged/tinted antique natural. Topped off perfectly with Tort guard, TRC and backplate. And a stinger!!!
Hardware includes, TRUE TUNE tuners, Music City compensated bridge, and TONEPROS locking studs.
Electronics include, Vineham 8.3 P90, CTS 500k pots and an Orange drop cap.
The neck is a full, beefy 50s carve. Jesse said he rolled it to mirror an original 59 junior he had.
Tone….the thing that I love about this guitar is that you can get screaming rock tones, warm thick creamy tones and it cleans up nice too.
Overall….i would say that Brown Bear guitars will continue to gain popularity as time goes on, if he continues to build guitars as good as this junior. Jesse does a lot of bolt on guitars as well. I’m very impressed with the quality of this junior. The tone and the playability is right up there with most custom shop models comparatively. Jesse does a lot of custom order work as well and is easily accessible on his instagram page and website.
