I talked with a tech today about recessing the floyd on my Charvel San Dimas body. He said because the neck pocket was angled, he highly did not recommend messing with that. does that sound right, or does he just not wanna do it?

That sounds right. You would not want an angled pocket with a recessed Floyd. You could have it shimmed a bit though in the pocket or have the neck heel skimmed.

I was thinking he'd just flatten the neck pocket on the body, I guess it's not as simple as it sounds

Recessed Floyds are for Ibanez's. Charvel guys like to let the guitar know who the boss is. When I pull up, I want to bang the tremolo off of the body just to teach my guitar a little discipline. :D

And no it doesn't destroy the paint either.

Dont you have another charvel to relic or chase around Ronnie on some forum?

not that easy to flatten the neck pocket, easier to shim or put a slant on the heel of the neck.

I talked with another guy, he suggested shimming the neck - so I guess you raise the back, then it's not got such an angle by the time it gets to the bridge... heck I could do that. He also mentioned he could "mill out" the pocket - I might go with that too. He's a guy I trust so I don't think he'd steer me wrong.

well, my Charvel body says Kramer on the headstock... so I guess I'm not a "Charvel" guy... I don't like maple necks either :D ... maybe I got the wrong guitar...

A friend on a Charvel forum wanted the Floyd on his production Charvel flush mounted against the body for pitch drop only (and a D-Tuna)...essentially this puts the trem in the same position as a recess. He simply routed out the neck pocket a bit deeper with great results. Shoot me a PM if you're interested in how he did it/what's involved.

Shimming in this case would require the shim to be placed toward the front of the neck pocket, leaving a visable gap where the neck meets the body...not a good option IMO, espcially if the back edge of the fretboard is too high, which I suspect it would be.

I have never seen those words combined in the English language before. I don't even know what that means.

haha, I swear it's the wierdest thing - as soon as I start sweating, maple necks just get extremely sticky and I can't move around well at all... I've tried finished, unfinished, etc... only thing I haven't tried was a satin finish, and I figured I'd already spent enough $$$ at that point and gave up.

i'm a die hard dive only floyd guy where it rests flat on the body when not in use...however... what you want should be real easy for a knowledgeable tech or luthier to do. all he has to do is route the neck pocket flat thus removing the angle it has then route it for the floyd recess. i've modded all my production model charvels so that the floyd rests flat on the body with the base plate parallel to the body when at rest so they're dive only and the floyd returns to touching the body for no pull up when i let go of it. i do this by routing a bit of the angle out of the back of the neck pocket thus decreasing it so the floyd no longer floats above the body an can be brought down to touch it when at rest. the same thing goes for what you want to do however all of the angle needs to be removed when routing the pocket thus creating the need for the floyd recess to get the action down to a playable height.

Listen noob. I saw those pics you took from the amp fest. How come every time you took a picture of Ralph it was a little blurry? I'll tell you why. Because you shake and shiver every time you see the object of your obsessing man crush and the camera can't take an in focus picture. So go ahead, hassle me about my crush on Ronni Le Tekro. We all know you're trying to cover for yourself.

It can definitely be done on a Charvel. I would let someone with some experience handle the job. Is this thread about recessing a Floyd or a Johnson?

I saw Ed D. with no shirt on after getting out of a shower once :inlove: :inlove:

took the tip of a medium pick and slid it under the back of the neck - lowered the floyd and adjusted some things, problem solved. Got what I needed, still got room for trem action. Might go for a more "correct" solution in the future, but for now she's working. Thanks for all the tips, advice, etc...!
