Can't seem to find a bridge pickup I love in my SG

I have an SG that I keep as my primary drop-tuned guitar (C# to be exact). I've been trying to find a good hot pickup I like in it. Thus far I've gone through a Gibson T500, BG Hellabucker, Wolfetone Blisterbucker, and now back to the Hellabucker.

While I generally prefer the more musical feel of hand wound pickups (or at least that's what I perceive of hand-mades. lol), I've been surprised I like the T500 most. I still didn't love it enough to go back to it and it sounds damn near perfect in my Les Paul anyway. With that pickup, I like it's over all eq. It has some really tight lows but doesn't sound like a bass guitar. The treble isn't exaggerated but is solidly present. Plenty of mids. But it's a tad harsh. It reminds me a lot of how V30s were for me at first. Good EQ but harsh.

The Blisterbucker lasted less than an hour in my SG. I popped it in and felt like I was playing a heavily over-driven bass. The low tuning doesn't help that, but damn. I'll be putting this pickup back for a guitar that is thin, trebly, and tuned to standard A444 lol. It's just the wrong match for an all mahogany guitar like an SG that's also tuned down.

I'm happy enough with the Hellabucker. It has that musical feel I referenced earlier. Good tight punchy lows and not boomy like the Blisterbucker. It really needs some more mids tho. I feel like if I could get the EQ of the T500 with the feel of the Hellabucker, I'd have what I'm looking for.

Anybody have any suggestions or experiences to share with hot bridge pickups in dark sounding guitars like my SG? I'd love to find the one that's just right in there.

BKP Emerald - Similar EQ to the Duncan Custom, just with Alnico V instead of Ceramic. In this case, it doesn't add mids, just sweetens the highs and the bass stays tight, IMO. Just a thought.

Duncan Custom is a good choice, too. Not as thick as a Distortion, which is a good thing for an SG, again, IMO.

I have a Bareknuckle Aftermath in my SG Custom tuned to drop B / C# standard. I really like it, seems pretty balanced and doesn’t get too dark. Upgrading the pots and wiring helped a bit, I bought a pre-built harness with 550k pots and that helped give me a little more brightness as well.

-{DIMARZIO}-DROP SONIC
-SG's are twisted, but simple bitches, "DARK SOUNDING SG" tells me you've gone too far with something like string guage or tuning,.. I've never had good results with heavily wound, real high out put PUP's on an SG,.. everything is a compromise, the D·§0NIC will give you all the dynamic's, harmonic's & snap of a PAF, I guarantee you'll like it...

Gsxrbusa posted a video of the KSE Fishman pups loaded into his SG. Sounded pretty gnarly.

Painkiller.
I don't have a Painkiller, but it's always interested me. Was wondering if you could elaborate a bit on the guitar it's in, tuning, strings, amps, and general impressions. Just curious... and I'm not trying to derail the thread (I think this is relevant to the OP's question). In any case, I'd love to hear your opinions on the Painkiller.

I have 57 classics in my sg and I really like them for it. Maybe not hot enough for you but I think, in general, people underestimate the awesomeness of mid output pickups. Thats where the magic is in my opinion... In terms of high output,I have really enjoyed the lace hammer claws and dissonant aggressors in, the nito hemis are ok too but I prefer the previous two...

Yeah man. The PK is in a walnut neck/walnut body Carvin st300c (superstat w/ floyd). Drop C and I've run everything from .50-.10s, .52-.11s, .54-,12s and .56- .13s with the PK in hte bridge. Don't have the PK neck and have never played it. Amps Fireball 100, Savage 120, KSR Ares, and most recently (Like last week and last night) I acquired a Splawn QUickrod Drop B+ and a Bogner 20th Anny Shiva and it has sounded great through them all.

Its been a great bridge for what I play which is a mix of thrash and death metal riffage. I don't play leads much at all but can say the PK bridge may not be a pup some would like for leads. The high notes are very open and bright; not harsh or ice pick, but definitely present. For heavy rhythm work its great. Its thick but not in a low end thick kind of way. instead it gets its thickness and weight from the mids which are very forward, aggressive and crunchy.

Its quite, very tight and articulate (Almost too articulate for me sometimes hahaha) and its lends itself to a very very punchy low end, at least with through all of my amps. Even with a TON of bass eq'd in, it will never flub out. Awesome pup for start stop stuff and heavy heavy chug, palm mute playing styles. I've been playing through it for about 2 years and absolutely love it, but I recently picked up a Duncan Distortion to swap it out with just to see how it compares.

Been through the same experience with my SG, finally settled on a Duncan Custom with an alnico 8 magnet placed in it. It’s by far the best in my SG so far.

Try a WCR Goodwood. It should sound glorious in the SG.

Lots of great ideas guys! I appreciate all the feedback. One thing a buddy of mine mentioned to me (Mr. Willy around here) is raising the screws to help make it a tad brighter.

On this note...

Mid-outputs just don't do what I want for the most part. I have a fantastic handwound set from MHD that has a hot alnico magnet. But for the style I want to play, I really need that lacerating hotness I've only found with ceramics and so forth. I plan to put this alnico set in my other SG, fwiw.

It's all good brother different tools for different situations. If you want to consider the lace stuff, the hammer claws have a more vintage feel than the dissonant aggressors or nitro hemis but they are still plenty hot. The Hemis are super hot, I mean super hot, I've got them in an explorer in D / Drop C and they sound good for a sledge hammer style attack. The Hammer Claws I have are in a V in D and Drop C and I would say are more vintage but still more articulate than the hemis and really sound great to me. The dissonant aggressors are in a Japanese Les Paul custom in C# / drop B / BADGAD and they are more articulate than the hemis but not "vintagey" like the hammer claws. The Hammer Claws are my favorite out of the bunch but they are all good relative to what you are going for.

I know its not the most popular pickup but the stock 498T that was in my SG was the best after trying several other options..

try the dimebucker in an sg...

i was surprised too...

SD Black Winter or Dimarzio D-Activator

Came in here to suggest the black winter. I liked it better than the painkiller, and has meaner/more complex mids than the 500t or the sh6 which are similar, but not as tight or modern.

Gibson Dirty Fingers, the old one, NOT the new one, but have someone pot it.
