I dont see this guy mentioned all that much and when I do, theres seems to be alot fo negativity towards him. When I was a kid before I played guitar, I worshiped Santana. Loved his tone his playing and what his style brought to the world of Rock guitar. He easily one of the most recognizable players out there; you cant tell its him with one note and the man plays with an assload of passion and soul IMO..

Now I can understand how his whole spiritual thing can turn people off but I think his playing speaks for itself. I watched a show the other night that talked about his new album of covers that were done with the Santana treatment and a bunch of guests and it reminded me of how much I dug him and his playing and still do..

Thoughts?

Old Santana is fine...............

New Santana??

Only guy I know that can noddle over other's work BADLY and sell a ton of CDs. That is all he does..........noodle over whatever he does these days. No form, context, nothing.

With me he falls into the same category as Eddie in that I would rather remember him as he once was. Or like BB in the sense that he is just kind of going through the motions at this point. Which is fine - they have certainly earned the right. But yeah I was a big fan at one point...he's up there with the all-time greats IMO.

But the last time I saw him live was in the early 90s and I kind of lost interest after that...

The story of him and mesa/boogie is a great one. I don't remember the details but something like he came into the store that Randall Smith was working at, modding amps. Randall had him plug into one of his little modded fenders and Carlos just went off. There was a crowd gathered outside listening to him wail away on it and the rest is history. Pretty cool....

Not a professional musician performance..................

The Mesa story is very cool though.

I disagree, Hes just doing his thing the way I see it. I cant say that Im a huge fan of it but to me its Carlos being Carlos. I think that he compliments the melody with his own and thats going to appeal to some and not others but thats all preference in the end

I too prefer the Old Santana much more than the new but I dont think that guy has slid like EVH at all, I think that hes just evolved a bit and is doing different stuff...

I actually liked more the new EVH than the new Santana.

I like his music don't get me wrong, but its all pretty much the same over and over again...

for me that new covers album is a joke, total sellout material and terrible covers..except 1 or 2

His playing displeases me mightily. He's a one-mode man in a multiple mode era.

Man, that is so painful to watch. He has no sense of the melody of the song at all.

I loved him growing up, but he seems to have lost his edge a bit.

I like Santana, particular the stuff before the 90's. I used to play with a guy who sounded very close to Santana, the problem was when we went to do songs other than Santana. I remember him playing an SRV tune and he still had that Santana tone... ;)

I'm with gainzilla. Love his playing. Saw him in Vegas last year and he was just killing it.
Don't like all the new pop stuff, but its better than most stuff on the radio nowadays.
Old stuff is just legendary.

Amen brother...Amen!

As soon as he hits a note...I know it's him. He's one of the few players that has a sound that's instantly and widely recognizable.

To me he was as influential as the other big names - Hendrix, Blackmore, Clapton, . . .

Probably a question of age, Kage. We're old farts, you know . . . :D

that stuff is great. the first video I posted above is crap. Hopefully you can see the difference between what he is doing now and what he was doing then. A lot of the hate comes from the fact that he was so good and so inspired and now...not.

At least in this "lead guitar free area of mass produced music" he's still accepted.

Not only this...He gathers up all the top selling artists of the day and puts them on one album...Then noodles all over their shit...Then sells millions of albums...Then wins grammys
