CASTERS: Easy on the back...but hard on the ears.

I used to always keep my cabs sitting flush on the floor. But lately they have been up their casters. Mainly so I can shove cables, footswitches and pedals under them when not in use.
I recently removed the casters from my Marshall 425A and BAM! Thick, chewy thumping response.
I've got to get all my other other cabs on the floor now. I mean, I'm not constantly moving them around or transporting them. So why the hell have I had them on casters for over a year

This is fairly common knowledge, but I suggest you try it if your cabs are always on casters. Although it may start a fight between your back and your ears.

a lot of guys I know that gig out and can't take off the casters, lay their cabs on their side for the coupling effect.

I did this for a number of years. Then I just decided to lose the casters!

Definitely true. I don't move stuff around too often either. So-casters are off

Keep the casters on for transport/moving, throw it up on a wedge of wood that just gets the casters to lift off the floor or stage.

I used to keep my cab sitting flush on the floor (carpet/concrete slab) and I was getting a lot of woofy, boomy to the point of unpleasant overtones. I now have it sitting on 4 bricks until I buy some casters for it...much better imo.

I wish all castors were the removable type that you can just pull out without removing screws.

I am curious how my mesa halfback 412 cab would sound with the castors off, but don't feel like removing them. I may just put it on its side and see what happens.

My Egnater TM2X12 has some great heavy duty removable castors on it. I agree that this is a great feature.

There's no doubt that having your cab sit directly on the stage vs. on casters gives you more low end, but as said by some others, I don't know that it's always useful. Playing on your own at home, I can understand wanting the wall of sound thing but that low end isn't that necessarily preferable live either. If I wanted that I'd just turn my cab on it's side though, true. Casters make moving 4X12s by yourself a lot easier when you need to setup/tear down quickly.

I install the Fender pop in casters on my Marshall cabs. About $20 for a set of 4

There were some old Sunn combos and cabinets that came with the wheels on the side.

Yup. I move my rigs at least a couple times a month, so good casters are a lifesaver, but I always tip my cabs over on stage or at practice.

I ordered a set of pop in casters for my Acme bass cabs, they are being installed on the side.... :)

I'm assuming you have to drill new holes?

Depends on the cab. All but one of my cabs are '70's, and I had to drill the hole deeper to accept the socket.

The one I am working on now is a 2003, so I can see what needs to be done.

I bought my Soldano quad 20 years ago and have always said I will get castors one day! I figure if I'm too old to lift a cab I'm too old to lift an axe.

That's what I'll be doing when I start gigging again.

I prefer my cabs with casters on the bottom. I dial in plenty of low end and the increased thump that I got without casters was too much.
