Just bought a new 2x12 for my Shiva. Curious to here from folks with experience on any degradation in sound that occurs because of casters? I see lots of cabs with and without...some touring bands don't even take combos out of their road cases before they're mic'd up.

What say you?

i think the convenience probably outweighs a lot of things, i wouldn't say a degradation in sound due to the casters, there isn't the floor/coupling effect which results in more bass/bottom end from what i've understood, but can also wreak havoc should you be playing in a horrible room

some good feedback here:

Like u81 said, more bottom end with the cab on the floor but that's not necessarilly a good thing. It is a guitar afterall so in most band settings you want to leave those low freqs to bass and drums instead of having 3 instruments fighting for the bottom.

I like removable castors, best of both worlds. You can roll the cab into the venue, remove the castors if you want. then put them on when the gig is done. I have heard of some castors rattling, but I haven't had that issue myself.

hard to imagine casters rattling with a shit ton of weight upon them

I like em off. The resulting lowend is really natural and thick sounding.
Plus, it's easier to eq-out that lowend than it is to add it in with an amp.

Noticeable difference in the low end without casters. I use to remove all casters on my cabs. But now u leave them on. Too much of a pain in the ass loading and unloading them nowadays.

I just put casters on my shiva 1x12 and it did take some thump
Away and change the tone a bit, but that is in my bedroom.
When it is miced up at a gig with all the band noise I can't tell
the difference at all. Get the removable ones, best of both
worlds

If you do not have quick-release casters, just roll the cab into the gig, and flip onto its side. Since I always prefered straight cabs anyway, I used to do it all of the time. It may not have been ideal, but it worked.

My Orange PPC412 didn't come with casters. I thought about putting them on. Any thoughts on good add on casters?

Casters if you gig. Unless you want to age yourself quickly by carrying it in and out of gigs all the time.

My 80's Randall cab the has cheap ass casters that u can get from Harbor Freight. I put the same ones on my 80's Carvin that I got in the late 90's. All are still going strong.

YOu got robbed if u spent more than $20 bux for a set of 4. Break out the drill and wood screws and be done with it.

In the room, no casters can sound bigger. In a band mix, it makes no difference at all. I admit , I used to like the bigger sound and would even set my cab up on it's side, but after viewing tons of live shows of my band on camera, there is absolutely no difference projected from the stage. The bass player is there for a reason. It honestly kind of falls into that 4x12 vs 2x12 debate, yeah the 4x12 sounds better to you, but at a live gig no one can tell or care unless you are not miced up.

So much balls with my cabs on the floor...however floor being wood with no rug is kinda nuts!
I bought gramma uralex for my cabs and now I am happy. I think lifting the cabs onto crates would be smart if you are recording but for jamming put em on the floor!

Yeah, my 2203KK through my V30 loaded oversized Krank 4x12 on the floor is THICKASFUCK.

I think caster's in the bedroom is important as they make it much easier to vacuum behind the amps...any bedroom tone tradeoff is worth it.

Got casters on an Orange 2x12 at the moment, and it still sounds huge; gonna put em on all the cabs soon; just too easy to move, man.
