Soldano/Caswell X99 preamp ...just sayin'

Caswell was responsible for the motorized knobs and midi presets, nothing to do with the circuit.

I always looked out for the Caswell #39 amp.

I don't know man, its pretty obvious Franks pulling the chain a bit there. To say he ripped out Caswells mod and put his in, and it was never Caswells mod on 39 in the first place?? George Lynch is on record talking about #39 and how Caswell modded it, and George had Tim subsequently mod more amps for him because of it. I'm quite sure if it were true about #39 being all Frank Levi, Lynch would have had a bunch of Levi modded Marshalls. I'm sure his mods are killer, but he's trying to change the facts up a bit methinks..

When I read it I thought wow, I don't know what's going on between him and Caswell on this one but it does throw wrench into the received history on this amp! It's a bold thing to put out there if not true for sure.

Caswell has always been the one credited with #39, no one has ever disputed this until Levi has with this claim. He probably saw that Caswell has had success, and wanted some himself. With Lynch's interview it pretty much sums up everything, at least concerning who originally modded #39. I'm sure Frank knows the mod, if he was asked to do more in the same vein.

ULAK was recorded with Lee Jackson Marshalls, and a Randall, and about 3 others. Great tone but not achievable by any one rig. I do believe Back for the Attack was done with a Caswell Marshall, plus others including DeMartinis magic Marshall that he borrowed and didn't want to give back lol...all these studio tones are so hard to replicate.

I do believe Back for the Attack was done with a Caswell Marshall, plus others including DeMartinis magic Marshall that he borrowed and didn't want to give back lol...all these studio tones are so hard to replicate.

Well, I'm just going by what was on his website for years detailing what he recorded each album with and what he used in the studio. Maybe I can dig it up. It's a really cool history the way he details out each album and tour. And while I agree that it's hard to duplicate the studio tones, by ULAK he had moved on from the Randalls, which he did the entire Tooth and Nail album with. But indicated that he did most, if not all of ULAK with the Lee Jackson Modded Marshalls. He had Lee so 4 of them for him. And, for some of the Acoustic parts. Used an electric through a Roland Guitar synth. And, then there's the legand if the Rockman. Lol

But, BFTA, he used several amps, including the infamous Aspin Pittman purple plexi.

Anyway, I'll try to dig the info up and put a link to it. It has a lot of detail info about touring and recording.

Let me dig up the clip I did of my #39 jcm800 ... Well no caswell or Levi touched my amp but based on what I found on metro forum years ago, I think I was probably 80 percent there. Anyway it was raw, mean and cut. Not that mhch gain in it so you still had to work for it. This is also part of the secret sauce.. lynch and Slash worked for that lead the one. Uh oh it is in the hands! You will notice that Slash mostly sounds the same through his sig amp and silver jubilees. Funny that he doesn't even use his own sig amp and has always run for the jubilees.

That would be cool. ULAK is one of my favorite recorded tones for sure, top 10 if not 5. My first modded Marshall was a Lee Jackson 87 2204, had an extra volume, mid position switch and that attenuator that sounded terrible lol.. But the other features were cool. Great amp, I think I paid 600 back in 2009? Don't see too many for sale anymore.
