I noticed that the Pres knob is all the way down. Just a suggestion, but to tame the lead ch's zing, you could take out the treble bypass cap on the lead ch's gain pot. Basically a permanent Haynes Mod. I did it to mine and it helped quite a bit to bring down the chirp.

Does the mod you're talking about work no matter what the gain setting is? It's my understanding that the Haynes mod is only noticeable when the gain is set to 4 or below.

No need for presence control on this amp, it's got so much high end on tap with just the treble knob.
Besides the presence knob does nothing till it's turned over halfway anyway.

I have turned the treble down to 9 and compensated with the presence before.

The presence control on my SLO is noticeable no matter where it is on the sweep. I usually run the presence on mine around 7. Mine seems to be warmer than most SLO's I've heard. Then again, it's a 92, and I think it needs new filter caps.

My presence doesn't start to brighten until you get it past 5ish.

Back to OP, the Alnicos sound great, I probably wouldn't have considered those before. I wonder how well they'd work in a 2x12?

Very cool.
That SLO's got alot of bottom end it sounds like.
OD channel has a nice sizzle on top.

Very nice sound(s) you have going there..I always thought of Alnico speakers just being for clean sounds, but know I know better!

question when it comes to SLO- how does one define 'fizz' vs 'hair'

Didn't really care for it.... until you turned the gain down (around the 6:30 mark). IMO that really eliminated the fizziness and brought much improved clarity. Not sure if that was a product of just the amp settings or if the speaker characteristics were coming through. Either way, from that point on, I enjoyed.

I agree. It was okay but nothing spectacular. That being said, it may have to be one of those amps that you play yourself to get the feel and true tone out of.
I actually didn't care for the sound of this video either.

Everyone has something they are looking for in an amp. To this day, I still think the Splawn Quickrod is one of the best tones out there for what I want and would choose that over pretty much everything I've played through. I still want to plug into a SLO to make sure. None of the videos to this point over the years have sold me on it.

Mine came with the Haynes mod and it may lessen a bit as the gain is turned up but it is still noticeable in the attack of the notes at higher gain settings IMO.

I tried the Haynes mod on mine and found it emasculated the amp. Sounded lifeless with it. I promptly reverted it to original state.

^^^You have to play one to know. Plenty of videos/clips show little or no difference between amps that supposedly have the same circuit. But in the room there's a BIG difference. Like a 6505..video makes them similar. Ha ha not so much when you play them. Mark 3 vs 2C+...same thing. Nothing wrong with a Mark 3 or a 6505...but the flagship amps DO leave the others behind IMO.

Exactly. The SLO and 6505 sound nearly identical in Al Borland's video, but in the room, not even close. Hearing an opened up SLO in person is a religious experience. Another killer video Reza. You should do that shit for a living. ;)

Thanks man, making gear demo videos is something I do for fun and for all the gear hounds out there. I actually make real movies for a living...
Oh, I know, thus the ;) .....

Sounds really great!

Did you ever get a chance to play a Hot Rod 25? Would love to see more reviews/playthrus of it.

If I can find one for around 1400 I will buy it. Till then nothing.
My buddy had a HR50 and an SLO. The HR is long gone and the SLO remains. Cool amp, but no SLO...

Rezamatix, were you running delay in the loop? What were you using for delay?
Really like the sound of those speakers with that amp. Sounds like it adds some "organic" to the almost hi-fi vibe of the SLO.
Those were great sounds without having to really crank the amp, like a lot of folks say is a necessity for the SLO.

There were some things I liked about the speakers and some I didn't. Hard to really tell in comparisons without having side by sides to quickly compare with. I liked it for the cleans and mid gain tones. I didn't like it as much for the high gain tones. Possible it could be very different in the room. Cool speaker though in many ways. Thanks for sharing.

Holy shit! I was expecting some great clean and crunch sounds with that speaker, but oh man does it sound good with high gain.

Sounds ok.
I wouldn't go out of my way house that sound but it's ok.
