I have a 2x12 cab loaded with CL80s. Things I can tell you.

- For me they just do not work in a 4x12. They just don't. I could never get anything to sound good with any of my 4x12 cabinets I tried them in (pair of Mesa Recto cabs, Marshall 1960 and a Peavey 5150 cab)
- They record astonishingly well in a 2x12. Very even response, really brings out the nuances of the amp. If you're into mics, a good ribbon or a Shure SM57/Senny MD421 combo is the way to go.
- I prefer them with 6L6 powered amps. I love my 6505+ with it.
- They need to be loud.

On the whole, if you're looking at a gig rig then I would look elsewhere. If this is a decently volumed recording rig, it's a great extra tone in the arsenal.

On the whole, I view my CL80 loaded 2x12 as a "nice to have". I doubt I'd ever replace it if it was destroyed in a fire but I like that I have it.

This is my experience as well. I have a pair in a 2x12 and it's extremely transparent, almost to the point of lacking character, but it's a great club gigging cab--really lets the character of your amp shine through.
