Was someone saying recently they really dig this speaker? Not the Classic Lead 80, the early 80's Rola G12 80.

I've spotted a local one, 1777 lead cone. Wondering if it's a worthwhile addition to the collection, don't believe I've ever heard one in person.

No Zen, the 1777 Rola sounds like a rawer, slightly more organic version of the Classic Lead 80. Same basic voicing. It’s the 444 coned version that is very unique and IMO sounds much better. It has a certain midrange no other speaker can produce.

Ok interesting, thanks man. The 444 cone G12 65 sounds terrible to me so presumably the 80 is a very different speaker all round.

They sound very different, though construction/material wise they are of the same family. The 444 Rola G12-80 is the sound of all 80’s era Anthrax/SOD (rhythm tones) so if that is to your liking you can’t go wrong with it. It’s the only speaker that’ll nail that particular fat rhythm chunkiness and specific grind frequency.

I'll keep an eye out but they're pretty rare down here. Shipping is getting so insane that buying 'affordable' speakers internationally is making little sense these days. Last quote I got was $187USD for a $120 speaker, crazy.

You could also search for 320w JCM800 cabinets in your home country. Then pester and annoy the prospective seller to pop the back off so the cone type can be verified. Also, those speakers were sometimes loaded in Marshall 1982A and 1982B cabinets from that era as well.

Hmm I don't think I've ever come across a 320W cab but good tip!

I'm a big fan of the original G12-80's with 444 cones. I have a 4x12 loaded up with them.
