Are they supposed to be shrill and spikey with lots of mids? Kind of like an overdone Van Halen tone? They sound this way with both my JVM and Peavey Classic 30. The lower gain tones don't sound great, but throw in some early 80s rock gain and yikes! Screeeeech.

they have an insanely long break in period.

Mine were VERY middy. like over the top.

sold one

one is for sale I guess, 16 ohms. $75?

Mine are very dark with a lot of lower midrange....We recorded our gig Fri nite, so I'll put up some of that so you can hear what mine sound like. They probably have about 8 gigs on them I think so far.

Mine had a real big spike somewhere in the higher EQ. I could not dial it out. Killed my ears. Yanked those f***ers out and sold them. Hate G12H30's. Greenbacks are much smoother, and I prefer V30's for gainier stuff.

Agree 100%

I like a V30/H30 mix. That's what I have in my G-Flex 2x12 (actually Hellatones) and it sounds really good to me.

:)

Mine are the smoothest speakers I've ever owned. There's nothing harsh about them. In fact, I'd say they're on the dark side. Definitely not as harsh as greenbacks or V30s. They are, however, broken in extremely well. I've beat the hell out of them for a few years.

I got a response from the seller -- they only have about six hours of playing time on them. Sounds like I need to break them in.

If you want them broken in...buy Hellatone30's from Dave at Avatar.

...cheaper, too.

your description is a classic example of a new gh30 that has not yet been broken in.

No doubt about it! The H30 is one of the harshest sounding Celestions I've tried when they're new, and they also seem to take longer than most other Celestions for break in. They're one harsh sounding speaker until they've taking a good, long beating.

I agree with this.

I had a pair of H30's for a month and played loudly through it a lot (even played music loudly through them to help break them in) the harsh high mid ouchies never went away. It really must take a long time to break them in, I gave up.

I had a set of 4 Hellatone 30's and they were quite awesome. I need to get another set...

The Hellatones i got from Avatar were dark and smooth. Almost too dark for my tastes. But i found nothing harsh or spikey about them. I do prefer Greenbacks for 80's tones though.

I didn't find the Hellatone 30's I had to be dark, but they were smooth and had a nice upper midrange. I really like them personally, they sound a lot better than V30's to me and don't sacrifice the clean tones like I feel V30's do....

+1 I love these. I just wish they were slightly cleaner. I think they have a ton of mids - I use an eq in the loop to dial out a db or 2 at 500hz.

I once had new H30s and they sounded like I stapled 2 paper plates together in place of the speaker cone. In retrospect I probably sold them before they were fully broken in.
