I am thinking of getting a cab with Greenbacks in it, and it would total to 100W. Anyways, I know they are amazing for low to mid gain application, but not sure how they will handle high gain. Also, I am worried about them only totaling up to 100 Watts when maybe down the line I will possible have a Herbert or VH4. Will they fart out and fall apart when you play them loud or can the retain an amps bottom end? Feel free to chime in about anything else too.

cab construction plays a big part. whenever anyone says that GBs cant do metal...i point them in the direction of the Framus Cobra cab.
its front loaded and constructed like two 2x12 stacked and has plenty of tight percussive bass.

The cab I played was a BX cab, but they had a VHT cab there, a Bogner cab there and EVH 5150 III cabs there and honestly the Marshall sounded the fullest and had the most round tone. It seemed to be built decently too, but of course it isn't built like a Mills or anything. The thing that I am worried about the most though is the whole wattage issue.

grab some 50w webers (1225 or silver bell) if you really wanna go over 100 watts
g12-65 clones can be a good option too, but they sound darker and less aggressive compared to G12M's

As someone mentoned earlier, the construction of the cab makes a huge difference in whether the speaker will "fart out" or not. My Bogner 4x12 had Greenbacks in it and I ran a 100 watt Dual Rectifier through it. Never, ever had a problem with loosness or anything like that. I had a Marshall cab loaded with G12T75's that farted out when I ran a 50 watt Mesa DC-5 through it. The quality of the cab is very important. I wouldn't worry about using Greenbacks with a 100 watt head, but I don't think it's wise to run a Herbert or VH4 with them. YMMV.

Well I don't think I'd want to switch out speakers. Here is my real dilemna, I am probably getting a Herbert but if I don't like that I'm getting a Cameron Marshall of some sort, which I know will sound killer with Greenbacks. Don't really know what to do though.

My main cab is a 4x12 w/ greenbacks and I run either an XTC 101B or Titan head through it (both 100w). Granted I'm not cranking either amp, but there's no fartiness or flub in the bottom end at all. Hands down my favorite speakers!

I would never plug a herbie into a100 watt cab.

I would...but I'd keep a fire extinguisher handy, 911 and the Fire Department on speed dial.

Run the AX with another 16 ohm 4x12 to relieve some of the stress.

They can do higher gain just fine. This was recorded on a 7string with Greenbacks in a VHT D412 https://soundclick.com/share?songid=6491756

As far as plugging higher watt amps into that cab - I wouldn't hesitate to try it, but I'd be carefull.
Hey, that clip sounds great. The bottom end seems to be retained well and no flub. But, I guess lets put it this way, as the rest of you said, I really wouldn't want to be held back from the speakers and not being able to crank the amp, but on the other hand, I see myself getting a Cameron Marshall....and with that, I know Greenbacks or H30s are the way to go.

Where do you play that you can crank a 100w amp?
Even w/o micing, I don't think I ever turn up even close to half way.

Good point....but the Herbert is 180W (not sure about it though, may only be with KT88s or something). I'd never put the amp past half way ever so I don't need to worry. I just am not sure if the speakers can handle the amp from the start.

My experience with High gain heads and Greenbacks was that they sounded pretty flubby and it wasn't a good match in my case. I hated them with high gain heads. Maybe I had a newer unbroken in set or something but it just didn't work. I had read a bunch before I bought the Greenback cab and everyone was saying no greenies for high gain. I should have listened.
