I have no experience with diy amp projects and know very little about electronics, do those of you that have put some of these together think a first timer may be able to build say a chupacabra or an afd? or would it be too much?

I'd start smaller. Get your feet wet before jumping in.

the chupacabra is only available as a complete assembly, unless things have changed

i would personally suggest one of the smaller amps to start with for a first timer.

Fender champ. One preamp and one power amp tube. This cool little cathode bias tube amp is plenty to get your feet wet. Or check out some of the kits offered from web.
I would say it all depends on you as far as what you are willing to take on as far how complex of a tube you want to build. I went from a champ to a 100w Plexi but I was reading sleepless fool about it.

I was considering a Ceriatone for a winter project but according to the web-site the kits are no longer being offered.
Kind of a bummer, are there any other Marshall type kits from other manufacturers that are just as good?

http://tubedepot.com/kitsguitar.html offers some nice kits for a decent price.

I'd start with a Champ kit. Then go for something bigger, like a 50 or 100 watt Marshall.

after browsing their site for a while now i think im just gonna buy a Yeti. hahaha

check out the ce distribution mod 101, its a really cool little amp.

I started off with a marshall 1974x 18watter amp , then did some of the metro plexi's , etc. I recommend checking out trinity amps out of Canada. Their amps are top notch and they have great instructions and a forum for help if needed. The parts used and chassis are really nice and their prices are fantastic. They offer mostly small to mid watt amps in each category. Marshall type, vox/matchless type, hiwatt type, fender tweed type. I plan on doing their Hiwatt inspired amp called the triwatt which looks like a fun build. It sucks that ceriatone no longer offers kits but they never did offer the afd or chupa in kit form anyway.
