Hi guys,
I'm new to this board, though I've been lurking for quite a while. The Chupa has gained my interest since I first set my eye to it, but noone has tried or bought one around me (I live in the Netherlands). In stead, I got me a Rivera knucklehead reverb. nice amp, but it doesn't suit my needs anymore. I also own a marshall JMP form 1979, which has been modded with a PPIMV, and some other tweaks so it would have a bit more gain on tap. I also have a trainwreck-clone, Engl SE, Koch powertone and a rivera m100. The thing is, I don't like any of them, anymore. I have a very wide taste, and play a wide variety of music. From Robben Ford, Larry Carlton and John Mayer to Iron Maiden, Metallica, Thin lizzy, the darkness, blues saraceno, andy timmons, santana, michael schenker (group)...
I've decided to get me a Glaswerks amp. I will get the amp in 2 (TWO!!) years from now, though it will be modified and customized to my needs (class A/AB switch, pentode/triode switch, and a nice tolex, I prefer purple croco).
but that only takes me so far, and I need an amp for my 'robben ford' needs for the time being so I decided to get a ceriatone OTS to bridge the time I don't have the glaswerks, and to see if I like the 'dumble'tone for a prolonged period of time. If I don't like it, I can sell it (here) for almost the same price I bought it for; they hold their value very well in the Netherlands!
But for all the others, you can't pull that off on a dumble. MSG, The darkness, thin lizzy, lynch mob, on a dumble? nah.
thats why I have the knucklehead reverb. it goes very much into that SLO/hotrod marshall territory. but it lacks something.Yes, it has punch, yes it can crunch like crazy. but when I play with really high gain (gain at 6.5, boost active), it starts to get fizzy. Sure, you don't need more gain, but even with the master volume cranked at 3, it becomes congested and compressed. its not as open and airy as Lynch's tone (sometimes). and with lower gainsettings, its too slick and compressed, compared with the marshall or the trainwreck.
the marshall also has its limitations. With gain above 8, it starts to get fizzy, and the trainwreck can't get more gain than the marshall.
Amps like splawn and cameron are nearly impossible to get here, not to mention their extremely high pricetag! Can't really afford those amps.
So, the question is:
will a chupa have as much gain on tap so I can play the stuff I mentioned?
Will it stay open and clean? not clean as in 'fender twin' clean, but not compresed.
Won't it fizz out like some jcm800's and jmp's (I've tried)?
A bit 'off topic' (fun, the startpost defines the rest of the topic, so how can I already go offtopic in the startpost, but ok); I haven't seen any, or much, rivera's in the LA gear shootout 2010. Why was that? I believe I saw the Tre and the K7, but not many more. Am I mistaken? and if the k7 (or knucklehead reverb) has indeed been compared with the chupacabra, how did the chupa fair?
Sorry for this huge story, but browsing the internet hasn't brought me closer to an answer to my questions, sorry...
