Ceriatone Yeti or Splawn Nitro?

The Diezel Hagen is easily the most exciting Diezel for me from the way it is described and sounds on the few clips I've heard. It's still out of my price range, though - although I haven't actually seen any UK prices yet.

I haven't personally played a Hagen. But it could be a good amp. No way of telling without giving it a try. But from the way it's described by Diezel, it should be a great amp. However, Channel 3 of the VH4 will always be the most iconic Diezel "sound" to my ears. Whatever you go with, I'm sure it'll be great.

I owned a Bad Cat Hot Cat 30R for a number of years before I got the VH4. DO NOT WANT. Go play one and if you like it, that's one thing. But I was just disappointed every time I plugged into that thing.

There aren't many amps I would tell someone to avoid. But the 30R is one of them.

wait did you trade it in at guitar center in ATL (the one at Druid Hills)? Only reason I ask is because I played a red tolex I believe 30R head there (and loved it hahah) it was sitting next to a schmidt and IMO that 30R sounded way better.

lol... That's weird. I first tried the Schmidt and Hot Cat 30R together at one time as well!  It was at the Mansons Guitar Shop in the UK, though.

I preferred the Schmidt as it was the more rounded of the two - it had a better balance across the frequency range. The Hot Cat was more versatile, and had a warmer clean sound, but it wasn't as practical or well-made. The Diezel was cheaper, had more features, and felt far more robust - it didn't overheat for a start.

Hey AngryGoldfish,

I went ahead and ordered a Yeti (with 6550's for extra beef!) about a week ago. So, once it arrives I'll let ya know how it does with the stoner/doom stuff!

EDIT: I'm also getting a butt load of pedals for some proper post-rock/metal jammage. I'll let ya know how it works out for that as well!

I play similar sonically-- I have a 67 plexi with a Diaz - "phase splitter to ground" mod It sounds like GOD -- I have implemented the mod into 2 other Marshalls sounds great__

I think you could go all the way to 1972 and have your Marshall modded that to me is the Best Tone for loose deep organic rock--

Nowhere near as vivid or organic.. but any of those new oranges would be fine -- but a vintage traynor or Laney would be better and cheaper then what you are looking at ----also what about Dirty Shirley?

An old mars is the "that" sound to me--- I played a Vintage orange it was awesome but a bitch cause you have to dime it it was an OR80 I always got complements on the tone -- but man o man it cleared out a few clubs!

1970 50 watt marshall?!?

  You were the guy that posted directly after my OP saying you had the exact same question! It's awesome you're getting one. I suspect it'll take about two weeks to arrive and to test it out, but please don't forget to let me know. I'll send you a PM or bump the thread if you do. This could be a deal clincher for me.

I haven't tried a lot of the newer Orange amps. I just haven't got round to it, even though they're one of the only companies that make products for the Irish customers that I still kinda like.

I'll look into the Diaz Mod. I've never heard of it. What does it do to the tone, if it is describable by words?

Traynor amps seem to be hard to find over here, ones that are in decent condition anyway. Laney's are relatively easy, but I have a hard time trusting the reliability of them. I'd have to have them looked over by a technician first, and that could be expensive by itself.

Marshall amps... I used to hate them because I never liked what the company were producing and releasing over the last five to ten years, and considering the fact that all these new amps were supposed to be based on the old sounds from the 60's, 70's, and 80's, I just assumed I wouldn't like the originals either.

Well, when I actually tried out the reissue of the JTM45, I realised I was wrong to make that judgement. I then managed to try out an 18 watt clone, and I was impressed there, too.

The Yeti is gonna take about 5 weeks unfortunately :( . But, I will put up a review for sure. Actually, PM me and i'll send you a review specifically regarding our mutal playing tastes

Hello,

this all seems to be a rather complex way to tackle a relatively simple problem: go on a personal tone quest.

I'm a drummer, a drummer that woke up one day and said "I want to play stoner rock guitar." First thing I did was call up a guy who makes good single coil pickups and had him make me an overwound set in a vintage 60s style for my mexi-strat.

They made my solid-state amp sounded horrible. "This is not stoner rock" said I. So, I went talked to a friend who had an amp stored in his chicken coop, a '71 Traynor YBA 1 Bassmaster. I bought it from him cheap, cleaned out the mouse poop, a paid another guy to fix it.

Next, I needed speakers, big ballsy speakers, cheap. So I went to craigslist and found a guy up the road selling a 70' Kustom 2x15 with some vintage CTS ceramics in there. Hooked it up. "This is stoner rock" said I, "but my house is falling down!" One cannot learn to play stoner rock at his house, if he is homeless.

Answer: a smaller 1x12 butchered Mesa Theile cab, a no name inefficient vintage speaker, and an attenuator. Even attenuated, the 50watts is still powerful enough to push that speaker into breakup. (oh yeah, I also got a Rangemaster booster clone).

That's it. The reality is all this took me over a year to find and put my stoner-rock rig together. Only 'new' thing I bought was the pedal. The moral, I think, is try to find good used vintage equipment, some luck and good connections, and don't break the bank.

Anyway, enough of that, I might be able to pick up a Laney AOR and have it completely torn out so that I won't have to worry about it breaking down in the future so much. I know a lot of people have had great experiences with the reliability of Laney, but so have those with Bugeras, it doesn't mean we should all go out and buy one because of one persons' positivity. Thanks, though, folks so far! I'm also considering the GH50L, as I have played that one first-hand and liked it.

I think I should clarify also: when I say a massive low-end, I'm not necessarily talking about Ampeg or Sunn low-end alone. I'm looking for something that balances vintage tones (strong low midrange, flubby AND tight low-end at the same time, not too much gain, etc.) and modern features (loop, enough gain for metal, versatility, etc.). I understand that what I'm looking for is very particular, and it would be a lot easier if I could simply try the amps out beforehand, but I won't be able to do that, so any advice would be appreciated, and has been thus far.

+1 on the Laney AOR. It's a stoner JCM800. Get the one with the 8 knobs not the 6 knobber. It's the tone of Sleep's Holy Mountain for fuck's sake! You can score one for $350 and have it beefed up at a tech for another $100 or so. They're made better than a lot of PC board amps are nowadays. Feed it into a cab with G12H30's and another with 1 or 2 - 15"s in it. A wooly pickup like DiMarzio's Tone Zone helps too.

They're hard to find overe here, but I'll definitely keep an eye out for one.

I'd love to do that, but I'm in Ireland and finding deals like that are very difficult. Traynor are quite hard to find over here, as are vintage Marshall amps, Sunn, Ampeg, and even a lot of the Laney amps. It would be fine it lived in America or the UK, but I'm not. I don't even know of any amp techs over here, and I know a lot of people in the music industry here.

Cool man; my Yeti is an awesome amp.

If you want to run pedals through it try the first two switches in the centre and the right most one to the right for least gain and to the left for more bottom end...use the right gain knob at about 9am, left gain knob about 9 as well and turn the master up as loud as you want.

For full tilt modernish gain run all switches left, left gain at about 2pm, right gain at about 11am and the master at about 3pm for a bit of volume. Sounds insane like this IMHO and makes you wish it had two channels! I just can't get that awesome fat high gain sound with pedals unfortunately...and I've really tried!

You can also scoop it fully and it still has loads of mids. Heaps of mids (max'd out) works great with the above setting but with the 1st switch to the right.

Watch out switching the era switch when the master is cranked in modern mode! HUGE volume differences!

Hope you like it.

lol no, I sold my 30R to a local ATL guy. And mine wasn't red. I think I have a picture somewhere...

Thanks man! Can't wait to try those settings out! Ya, would be amazing if it was a 2 channel amp. Hmmm, wonder if Nik would ever consider sticking a simple clean in there?
