Changed the v1 tube on my Slo 30

I tried every tube combo on the planet when I had the SLO30. Nothing got rid of the flub I didn't care for.
Boosts, you name it. I couldn't make that amp work for my tastes.

Every amp has flub with out a level boost hitting the front.

Dig it ! I put a Tung Sol in V1 in my SLO 30 a while back and prefer it over the JJ in the same spot . Gives it a little bit more of a clear open tone. I’m gonna eventually try Tung Sol in V2 also.

I've done a lot of rolling with my SLO-30. I put GT 12AT7s in V1 and V3 to tame the gain a little. But yesterday I threw a newer Mullard 12AX7 in V1 and like it a lot. I feel like I'm wasting something by only running the gain on 2, but that's as much as I can take. I always dime the volumes and then control things with the gain knobs.

I run the gain fairly low on the overdrive channel . Started off at 2 now I’m up to 3. I really dig the tone it gets

The amp comes with ARS pre amp tubes and the seller I got it from had put a JJ in there which was way too hot so I put the ARS back in
The ARS is probably a JJ if V1, if it says ECC83 on it, otherwise Chinese. I know both were labeled ARS in the Friedmans.

Really good to know, I've never tried one. I'm sure it's better than an ARS or JJ!

I have an SLO 30. I dig it! I feel all frequencies are present in this amp. Thick low mids and mids, high mids and highs. As some one already stated cranking the presence brings out the high mids and highs. Use the treble to control the highs. Also as someone else recommended the Tungsol in V1 will cut a bit of the lows and low mids and highlight the other frequencies. Also, like many amps, if you’re playing at lower volumes the low end can be a bit flubby. The higher you get the volume the more it firms up.

Cool man...I have to do some tube rolling in my EVH combo. I think these type amps really do respond well to different preamp tubes in different spots. I've had other amps in the past that don't matter too much when ya swap tubes. I know my EVH has all JJs in her, but I have a ton of vintage amperex, Jans, etc. I just haven't done it yet.

So you guys are buying $3k amps and fucking around with tubes to make it sound acceptable to your ears?
Yes... That's why I ultimately returned the SLO when I tried a second time.. Too expensive to have to go down a rabbit hole to get it where I liked it. Bought and returned twice.

I am curious what cab/speakers you were using?
