......personally, I like the LP at the end better! :D Regardless, he friggin' rocked back then!

That LP tone is sooooo much better, IMO. But who knows what gear he was using since the clips come from different time periods.

Used to be a huge Viv fan, now I can't be bothered. He seems like a whiny bitch these days.

Riverdogs is his best post-Dio work, though. Great tone and playing on that record. Too bad it did not go anywhere.

I'm still partial to Viv's tone from the early Dio days with his old LP Deluxe and an 800... Though that did sound cool for sure.

Yep, it is ashame about Riverdogs never going any further. Great playing for sure, though.

On a separate note:
Do you think he and Reb Beach like playing second fiddle to another hot rod guitarist, or do you think it is just a great paycheck type of thing? Seems like a waste of talent to me, but I guess someone has to do it........ but another flashy lead player?

What amps was he using when he was with Dio?

I read somewhere that Dio was very controlling in the studio. It's one of the things that Viv didn't like about him but, it's Dio's band so...

Anyway, Viv said that Dio wanted him to plug straight into a JCM800 from what I can remember.

FYI, there is a NEW Riverdogs CD coming out later this year, featuring the original line up of the band (with Viv).

Unless it's the backseat and you have to bend over to get paid. No Thanks.

Viv and Reb are basically playing covers and getting a decent paycheck...nothing wrong with that.

I don't get why Sykes won't ever tour with Coverdale, that would be awesome! They must have had some falling out.

Wow I love the charvel but damn the les Paul did sound a lot better.

Isn't he Phil Collen's bitch now, standing in his shadow onstage hardly playing anything.

I love Vivian's playing with Dio. I hate his playing with DL. Actually, I just hate DL material after Clark's death.

Viv was the king back then. . .

I met him in LA in the late 80s right before his Riverdogs album came out. Really nice guy.

I would love to see Sykes with Coverdale again, but to not understand why he wouldn't, seriously? They toured together for 3 or 4 years; Sykes writes the record of his lifetime (one of the greatest rock records of the 80's), and the month before it's supposed to be released is fired and replaced with someone that has a bigger name.

If the record bombed, maybe it wouldn't have been a big deal. But Whitesnake exploded and the general public thinks that the video band were the ones that wrote and recorded it. To make matters worse, all of the touring revenue that he lost over that...If I was Sykes back then, my foot would have been so far up Coverdale's ass, he still wouldn't be able to sing.

Exactly the point !

I really like his playing back in the Dio days. It seems to me he's been on the downward spiral ever since. When I saw he was in DL, I thought that might be good... But they continue to redefine LAME everytime I hear them. I would like to see him do something else that's good....seems to be a major waste of talent.
