It is pretty sad to watch Viv's back-slide. LOVED his work with Dio. My band used to play Rainbow, Don't Talk to Strangers, and Last In Line back in the day. Loved his fire and passion (reminds me of Gary Moore of course). And I really dug River Dogs when that came out. But yeah... his work with Lep has just been utterly homogenous, forgettable, etc. Just nothing to sink your teeth into there. Of course, their work has been that way since Pyromania (and maybe Hysteria -- if you count production and song-writing, but not guitar playing).

Oh... and Sykes is just a MONSTER. So sad that he's just sort of been in purgatory for so long.

He and Viv should stealthily hook-up for some sort of dual-guitar shred-fest (with Sykes on vocals) and come-out and BLOW everyone away again. But while I'm sure John could still do it, I'm not so sure about Vivian any more.

Sykes and Coverdale hated each other. I think it boiled down to each person's ego being bigger than the other. Regardless WS was David's band and that was that. Several years back they almost worked together again but was eventually just left at that. That's when Coverdale went with Doug and Reb. DC often stated the worst move he ever made was hooking up with Sykes. Odd because the album Sykes wrote has paved the way for Coverdales career long after it should have been over. Whitesnake would have never made it past being an opening act had it not been for the 87 album. One of the best pure live bands I've ever seen was the tour to support the "Slide it In" album with Sykes and Cozy Powell. Huge sounding band. And as much as I love Adrian and Vivian...and as badass as Sarzo, Viv, Adrian and Tommy were...the Sykes and Powell version of Whitesnake sounded about a billion times better.

Viv will return to Lizzy when DL finish up. Had to leave for the upcoming tour. And yes the first Riverdogs 1st album was incredible. IMO the high point of Vivians playing. I have a copy of the "basic tracks" for the new Riverdogs album...Marc the drummer gave me a copy. Tracks were not finished...still needed some guitars and solo's...not bad. Not near as fiery as the first album with Vivian though.

What amps was he using when he was with Dio?

He used Marshalls for the first two albums, he used Boogies and Marshalls for some of the later Dio albums, but always ended up with Marshalls when touring with RJD. Some did say that Ronnie insisted on Marshalls live, but I dont know if that is the case, Craig Goldie used Randalls (RG100's) when he came onboard with Ronnie, so that kinda blows that theory out of the water. Viv got a lot of crap over the years for certian decisions made, but when he was with RJD he was the stuff of legend. I got to see him multiple times on every tour he did with Ronnie (11 total), and met him backstage after a show in Biloxi, he was very approachable and laid back.

Vivian has made it clear in several interviews that he views the music he made in Dio as having zero value and that he could care less about it. Since his Dio days he has been nothing but a hired gun fill in for bands that had killer songs way before he came along. That has been the vast majority of his career, he has contributed almost nothing since the Dio records were made, apart from the excellent Riverdogs record where he had very few writing credits. That band was even together and had most of a record written before he was in it.
