I just bought my first charvel san dimas with a floyd on it. I never used floyds before- because I hate the complexity and string change and I never did the whole harmonic dive bomb stuff etc. Anyway, I'm going to buy a trem stopper to block it and tighten it all the way down so I can do bends or double stops and the open strings will stay in tune. What i'm wondering is if anyone here has replaced the floyd with a schaller vintage tremolo 3801? is it a straight replacement that would not affect intonation etc? thanks for the info

Not sure about the swap but the Tremel-no works great for what you want. The intonation depends on the new trem. Highly doubt the blocks will be set perfectly so plan on setting intonation. it. If your looking for a simpler string change there are other Floyds that load through the back of the trem. Floyd Rose II and there are some others like the speed loader.

It would likely work but you'd have to check the stud spacing to be sure.

As for blocking the trem, if you don't need the ability to lock/unlock it, a good old fashioned piece of hardwood cut to fit the cavity between your trem block and guitar body works great.

It's a non fine tuning Floyd with vintage style saddles where the strings pass through the block. If it were me I'd put the Floyd locking saddles on it and a set of Sperzels...don't know what you'd do with the lock nut though...no way to tune it without un-clamping it.

+1. You'd also get more resonance/tone from this than a tremolo no. Maybe it's because my first floyd guitar was purchased back in '87, but I've never found them to be that big of a deal to set up or change strings on. Only 'bad' thing is when you lose that damned allen wrench. I keep one in my wallet and also have put a small piece of shrink wrap tubing on all of my floyd sized allen wrenches so if they get mixed up I can ID them easily. :)

thanks for all the info guys... I'm going to wood block it first and maybe play with it, do some string changes and see how it goes. I didn't know some Floyd rose trems were set up differently concerning loading of strings- interesting! I was just going to take the locking pads off and leave it as is like paul gilbert. Cant wait to try this thing out!

I have used these in the last year or so, and really like what they do (just look on eBay for 'trem stop' or 'trem stopper':

above... that's exactly what I was thinking about initially.. very easy to install.

I just shove a piece of wood or something to block the Floyd on my SoCal. Works just fine.

I used the trem stop in all of my SDs and they worked just fine...not sure I'd personally go to the hassle/expense of swapping the trem just to keep it from floating
