So, got the SoCal. First, a pic of it next to it's 2008 Fender USA strat cousin:

Now for the review. ;0

Took it out of the gig bag, was out of tune (which I figured it would be) and the neck had too much relief. To be honest, it played ok but not great. So, I took it and tuned it to Eb (band I'm going to gig with tomorrow does all tunes 1/2 step down) and dropped the action. Was better, but still not great. Jammed a knob in the floyd cavity (keeping the strings slack) and took the neck off, and after two times had the neck perfect. The truss rod was LOOSE when I adjusted it the first time. Hm. However, it's a quartersawn neck, and those are more stable IMHO than flatsawn... I bet I don't have to mess with it much.

After I did that, I restrung the guitar, checked intonation, all was good but the D. Lowered the action where I wanted it, set the trem for a 5 fret pullup (open G pulls up to C, good times!), and then adjusted the action a hair from there. Set the intonation, plugged the guitar in, great success!

Fretwork is great. Neck feels great too. I have owned several San Dimas Jacksons and a few old Charvels, and the necks varied a bit. This one is really nice - not too thin, not too fat. I like the 1 11/16 nut width too. Neck fit very tightly in the pocket when I removed it for adjusting the truss rod in the heel. The coating or whatever on the neck feels better than painted, but not as good as a neck that has had the crap oiled out of it. I may go back later and sand it down and hit it with boiled linseed oil. It would also bring the grain out too.

Floyd rose stays in tune once the guitar was setup and strings stretched, but the fine tuners are very gritty feeling. I also had to tap the D string saddle with a hammer and screwdriver to get it to free up - it was stuck somehow in place even with the adjustment screw removed. Arm gets loose too easy, I'll probably have to threadlock it.

Headstock tuners are gritty feeling too. the FMIC 'we own the fender headstock' thing on the back of the neck was a decal. Took that off. Volume pot is smooth, pickup selector is ok, but it's weird having that type on a strat, I'm used to a blade style.

Paint is gorgeous and actually a little better than the 2008 strat next to it. Flat black pickguard doesn't bother me as much as I thought it would, gives a great contrast to the super-gloss paint. The volume knob has to go, damn thing will tear up your finger if you use it too often. Has a very aggressive 'grid' or whatever patterned in the side. I don't like the placement either, I'm used to it being closer to the bridge pickup like on a strat.

Guitar stays in tune well enough that I doubt the fine tuners and headstock tuners will be a big deal for most of us. Time will tell if the floyd can stay in tune and won't wear prematurely on the pivot points. Pickups sound great.

bottom line: When they have another color I dig, I'm buying it. For $999, these guitars are a great value. Even if you spent the coin to replace the floyd for a better one and replaced the tuners, it's still a great value.

Anyone want to buy a sienna burst H/S/S 2008 strat with hardshell case and all the goodies? :)

Funny...... ttosh on this site put his favorite USA Fender strat up for sale too right after he got his San Dimas Style 1 from me.

I love mine! The neck is oil finished according to the specs. It will take a while for it to darken and get that worn in feeling, but whatever they are using to oil it feels drier to me than whatever Charvel and Jackson used to use. I don't think you will even need to sand it before applying another coat of oil. I may go Tru Oil on my next string change. I have been #0000 steel wooling the back of the neck every couple of days. I had to do that whenever I bought a San Dimas Charvel or Jackson in the past too.

Volume knob placement is perfect for me. Just where they have always been on 95% of the San Dimas Charvels. I can't stand the volume knob placement on a strat. It doesn't leave me room for my messed up picking technique. The cool thing about the So Cal is you can get a new pickguard and put the knob wherever you want it. On the non-pickguard models you are pretty much stuck with the placement. Although psychodave said the volume knob placement on his style 1 was the best of any guitar he had ever owned so.... different strokes.

I'll tell you guys, the black So Cal is the one of this bunch that looks better in person than in the pictures. With the gloss black and flat black combo it looks like some sort of high tech weapon.... which I guess it is

Very cool , looks like a nice Charvel . Funny , I'm trying to decide betrween the '08 Standard and the new charvel . I had an '82 strathead and really want this new one , but I have 2 floyd guitars already and want a basic strat .

Well, I'm still holding onto my EJ strat, I love that thing.

The neck on the Charvel just doesn't feel oiled though, more like they dipped it or something in a sealer. All the oiled USA Charvel and Jackson necks I've owned were very different than this. Still a great guitar though... when do you find out what the next colors are going to be? ;)

I think you want an '08 standard H/S/S strat in sienna burst. *jedi mind trick*

Yeah the neck is the goods for sure, I have no more need for GMW when it comes to 1 11/16 Charvel type profiles ;) PLayed it for week straight and took some 0000 to it, edges are already rolled pretty good out of the box.

I am not digging the Tonezone at all though, I see a SD Custom coming on soon. I may replace the 20k pot as well with a 500k CTS like Dave pointed out, not sure yet but this being my third RoHL guitar I am not digging the lead free solder in regards to guitar wiring. I had to redo a Schecter already.

These are the bargain of the year imo.

Still no confirmation on the next batch of colors. What I'm wondering about is if they are still going to only let each store get no more than 2 of the new colored guitars. I could have sold 15 of the candy tangerine So Cal's this time around and no store was allowed to order more than two.

birchwood casey is what they are using on the necks,...

Hey Pete, how bout a review of the Nova system you snagged?

sounds good. bit worried about what you said about the trem, though...:)

Hee Hee... if it was olympic white/maple neck I probably would .
Which one has a chunkier neck ?

Didn't get it, they emailed me after I won the auction and let me know it was being recalled by TC. They let me back out of the deal... I bought an Axe-FX that should be here early next week. :)

Let me go on record then and say that birchwood casey is nothing like what they used to use. It reminds me of the sealer that mighty mite dips their current import necks in. Not my favorite.

I can't wait to hear your review on that, Pete. I bet you will be able to make it sound great.

Make sure you upload some of the IRs.

Try some "Rem-Oil" (gun oil made by Remington) on the threads on the fine tuners. Should work like a charm and not leave a big mess.

Sweet, I'll give that a shot. Thanks.

I can't wait to get my hands on it, been reading the manual here at work and I'm drooling on my keyboard. :) The IRs seem really cool too... I'm also looking forward to comparing the axe-fx versions of amps I own. So far, I have the bogner ecstasy, a trainwreck clone, and a dumble clone in common. If I could get the A-FX to get close to the bogner and 'wreck I will be super happy. I'd still gig with the 'wreck if it had an fx loop!

Put the oil on neck then wait a day.
Now... sand with 400 sand paper.

Now, with your fingers put some Birchwood Casey Gunstock Wax and rub it into the neck.

Wait a couple hours and buff like mad with a SOFT dry cloth!

This will have the fastest neck in the world if you follow these steps. The oil "raises" the grain and then sand, then wax!!!

Try it.

Keith, it is more like a sealer than an oil. I really think if I sanded on the neck I'd have some clear/sealer come off instead of wood! : )

So sorry Bro!

I thought it was a bare maple neck with no finish!!
Appologies!

Keith

I'm suprised they didn't have the trussrod adjustment at the headstock so you didn't have to take the neck off. Is that how the originals were?

Stratheads, yes. Pointies, no.
