Since my band has been doing a lot of out of state gigs, I've been thinking of getting a second guitar. Every time the trailer/truck hits a bump I get a slight heart attack thinking about my 68RI LP Custom sitting in the back.

I know you guys all love the Charvel stuff here, and I've been curious about it. I'm looking at a red Model 2 with the original JT6, and a Super Distortion in it. Looks to be in pretty good condition, are these good "player" guitars? Or should I just go for the San Dimas?

I do classic metal and modern metal sort of meshed together with a bit of trash, classic rock, and blues thrown in.

The model 2 neck is pretty thin so it might take a bit of getting used to. And you realize that you're only going to have one pickup. If either are an issue, I'd suggest getting a newer one. I think there's two for sale in the classifieds. Another issue is that guys seem to think their model 2 is somehow worth a ton of money.

I had an LP Classic (pre 2008) for a while and that neck was smallish, so maybe it will be similar? I did not think I'd like the bigger neck on my custom before I got it, but I got used to it over time. I'm not too concerned with how it feels, if I really don't like it I'd try to flip it, just want to make sure its a solid sounding/reliably built guitar. The one I'm looking at just had a set up recently.

Yeah I'm cool with the one pickup. And actually I think this one is fairly reasonably priced, around $500 shipped (with HSC) - I'm not trying to spend much more than that right now.

I picked up a Model 1 last week. For the $ this thing is a player, man. Mine is pretty mint although it has an EVH Wolfgang in it; got it for like $350 shipped with a case. Worth the $ to me, anyway.

Neck is thinner than what I'm used to, being an LP guy who prefers fatter necks, but it feels like the EVH Stealth I had awhile back and I dig it. Might take some getting used to if your 68RI is one with the bigger neck.

They're really good guitars. A model 2 was my first real guitar and I bought it with my own hard earned money. Took a long time for me to save up the money too. I know where it is and I'd love to get it back some day, for sentimental reasons.

If you can get used to the neck and one pickup isn't an issue, then go for it.

It's not the GC model, so it has whichever neck profile they used in 2001 (the year it was made). I don't think it's quite the R7/R8 neck, but I've heard its somewhere in between R9/R8 - could be wrong on that, don't remember where I read that.

Anyway, I think I'll make an offer on this one, thanks for the feedback guys. I'd welcome more input if anyone has experience with these guitars. I'll do a little review when it comes in too (if I get it)

They're nice guitars, but it depends on what you're paying IMO. GC.com has a few, but they're like 500. Way too much. For that you can get a 2010-11 MIJ and they are a step up. 200 more and a 08-09 USA. So 250-350 is all I'd pay for a model series except for a 5 or 6, those are neck through. IMO.

Hm, okay. Guess I'll keep looking then. Is the MIM stuff any good, or should it be avoided?

They're all good guitars, I just feel the newer version necks are more true to the originals, and resale will be better too. Model series have a really thin neck and feel like a toy compared to the newer ones. I've only played 1 mim version and it wasn't as nice as the MIJ/USA from 08-11. But that's only 1 and others really like them. Chubtone is a dealer and maybe he can set you up with a new one for not much more than the model 2? I will say that the mim neck was nice, just like the others....

Nothing beats an old Charvel!   :D
