I recently ordered a Charvel and the one I ordered has an ebony neck. Since its on backorder I'm tempted to switching the order to another one with maple.

I know this sounds weird but I haven't played a guitar with a maple neck in probably 30 years. When I first started learning at 12-13 my bestfriend had a cheap guitar(mako i think?) that was single coils and a maple neck and my guitar was a generic pawnshop LP until I got my first name brand guitar of a BC Rich Bich which both had rosewood I believe. Anyway I hated his guitar so much that it pretty much turned me off to maple necks and single coils in the bridge position for the rest of my life. For me it was like eating a food that gives you bad food poisoning and you never eat that food again.

Now I'm thinking of giving it another try. I just wanted a superstrat with a trem just to play stuff outside of my usual death/doom/Stoner/sludge/thrash metal. I remembered the maple neck as being really slick almost like it was laminated or waxed or something. Was that just the el cheapo guitar or does maple have that kind of drastic feel over other woods?

Also I was going with a model with a Floyd rose but some of them have the gotoh 105 bridge. I have been using hipshot, tune o matics most of my life until recently getting into evertune. I think the last guitar with a trem was a Yamaha Pacifica in 1995. Would you guys recommend the floyd version over the gotoh? Im stepping out of my comfort zone with this guitar but Im not sure how far out of my comfort zone Im willing to go.

Charvel Maple necks are either raw or oiled , not glossy at all.
Floyds rule once you learn how to set them up, every guitar i own except for my les Paul has a Floyd on it (even my 7string does)
your questions are almost to the point of being
"hey guys I'm going to start dating again , I really like this brunette I met but I remember my brother dated a brunette when I was younger and she
was a real bitch , should I just date a blonde instead?" :)
No one can answer your questions but you, If there are any open where you are ,go to a store and pic up one of the new Charvels and fiddle around on it for a while, you'll figure it out pretty quickly I'm sure. oh I and I love Charvels, but I like the older MIJ ones , or UA makes, the MIM are too inconsistent for me

The dating analogy is very similar to the way I thought of it after I posted it. I did use a floyd for a few years when I was a kid. Scott Splawn actually showed me how to set them up when I has a kid so I'm not really worried about that aspect. I was mainly curious to the gotoh trems.

But you cleared up my worry on the neck. I have tried the roasted maple on Ibanez guitars and really enjoyed it. Typically my local shop may have 1 or 2 charvel if I'm lucky. I may stop by after work and have a look.

Thanks!

good luck , I just got a new Splawn Super sport last week :) Scotts a good guy

I was the same way. I later learned that they shine in many applications. They have a more immediate attack than rosewood. I like them with Marshal flavor amps more so than in super high gain amps that can be fizzy. I am not a big whammy user, but love Floyd’s due to their tuning stability. The key to success with Floyd it to stick with the same string gauge, model, brand, Not all gauges are consistent across manufacturers. I use elixirs and go a month or 2 between string changes

Its a gotoh 510 and personally think the it’s a crap shoot with tuning stability on these models. Do some google searched on Charvel dk24 tuning issues. I returned mine it was so bad. It tried nut sauce and typical remedies to no success. I pick one up everyone I got GC and I haven’t found one yet that’s stable to my satisfaction

Go for a USA 08/09 or a MIJ 10/11; those are very consistent players imo. Some will compete with custom shops with playability/tone. MiM are more miss than hit, unfortunately.

13-14 MIM are great too. Still had quartersawn necks Grover tuners, etc. new MiM stuff is trash

This. If you have a 510 tuning stability is going to depend on how well the nut is cut. They do sound and feel slightly different than a Floyd also

On those models, the issue seems to be more directly related to the strings binding on the unnecessary string tree on the DG string. A lot of people remove them, but I have issue buying a new guitar only to remove a part and have a hole in the headstock.

I had a DK24 in Army Drab with the roasted maple neck. Loved it so much I got a custom with roasted maple neck and roasted mahogany body with fixed bridge. Can’t help with the years of maple dread you describe, but I can say I love the way these Charvel roasted necks feel. Nothing like you described the cheapo laminated neck. I like the 510 better than a Floyd, but that’s going to be a personal thing for everyone.

I ended up getting a jackson pro series soloist. I want to order something like a Pro mod at some point but I may just wait and do a warmoth build or get a chubtone or something similar. I just wanted something with a trem to play around with. I havent bought a new guitar in over a year so I figured it was time. I got a custom Mayones due to ship in March that im excited about but its an evertune.
