I recently ordered a Charvel and the one I ordered has an ebony neck. Since its on backorder I'm tempted to switching the order to another one with maple.
I know this sounds weird but I haven't played a guitar with a maple neck in probably 30 years. When I first started learning at 12-13 my bestfriend had a cheap guitar(mako i think?) that was single coils and a maple neck and my guitar was a generic pawnshop LP until I got my first name brand guitar of a BC Rich Bich which both had rosewood I believe. Anyway I hated his guitar so much that it pretty much turned me off to maple necks and single coils in the bridge position for the rest of my life. For me it was like eating a food that gives you bad food poisoning and you never eat that food again.
Now I'm thinking of giving it another try. I just wanted a superstrat with a trem just to play stuff outside of my usual death/doom/Stoner/sludge/thrash metal. I remembered the maple neck as being really slick almost like it was laminated or waxed or something. Was that just the el cheapo guitar or does maple have that kind of drastic feel over other woods?
Also I was going with a model with a Floyd rose but some of them have the gotoh 105 bridge. I have been using hipshot, tune o matics most of my life until recently getting into evertune. I think the last guitar with a trem was a Yamaha Pacifica in 1995. Would you guys recommend the floyd version over the gotoh? Im stepping out of my comfort zone with this guitar but Im not sure how far out of my comfort zone Im willing to go.
