Guess I'll ask this over here too. I did not know this place existed. Always love a new forum to frequent!

Hey guys,

I am looking at making a foray out of the Ibanez realm and was looking at one of the Charvel USA Custom Shop So-Cals. The hardtail one I am looking at has the following specs:

# Basswood Body - Ferrari Red
# Maple Neck with Ebony Fretboard
# Neck Backshape - Charvel USA San Dimas™
# Neck Finish - Gunstock Oil
# 22 Jumbo Frets
# Nut Width - 1 11/16"
# Compound Radius - 12" to 16"
# Hipshot Solid Brass Bridge
# Controls - Volume
# Scale Length - 25.5"
# Pickups - Seymour Duncan® SH-5 (Bridge) & Seymour Duncan SH-2 (Neck)

Anyone play the new Charvel Custom Shops? I played this one and it just felt incredible and while I did not get a chance to plug it in, it sang acoustically. The fit and finish was dead on and beautifully done. They are $2500. I play 80's metal (Dokken, Ratt) and write instrumental guitar songs, think Satriani.

Thoughts?

Jeff

Either way talk to Curt, knows Charvels like no other, and his customer service is outstanding.

I've played a bunch of both...winners and duds to found in both lines. I would definitely play a few Pro Mods...arguably the best value out there for a super-strat and a few of the ones that I've really liked could easily hang with their custom shop brothers. The biggest complaint that I've heard is the cheap Floyd but its an easy upgrade to a German model if it doesn't cut it for you (I personally think they function/sound fine).

I'm a Custom Shop and Pro Mod Charvel dealer. If you go with the standard Charvel NOS brass hardtail bridge it's only a $25 upcharge. Add another $85 for black plated brass. My guess is that the Hip Shot will add about $150 to your total. The Hip Shot is not listed on their option sheet but they're a custom shop so they will do it.

Any other questions, let me know. I don't see anything on your specs list in your first post that would make it $2500 through me.

How much does something like the OP's specs usually run???

Hey Curt did you get those Custom Shop Charvels in yet?

No. It's a minimum 3 months wait for a basic, no frills Custom Shop Charvel. As the specs get more involved or the paint gets fancier the wait goes beyond that 3 months. We have a couple of months to go here before the first ones arrive.

Wondering what kind of tone I am going to get from a Basswood body, ebony fretboard and the Duncans that are in those things. Any thoughts? I did not get a chance to plug it on the other day.

Here's what I'm thinking, two different trains of thought.

I have been contemplating finding a band, I play alot of 80's hair metal stuff like Dokken,Ratt and the sort but I also record stuff like what I've done here: www.myspace.com/satchmo72 and was thinking about using my RG770DX for the band stuff since it is a maple fretboarded, Tone Zoned monster and using the Charvel for my recording stuff.

I dont mind having the hardtail for my recorded stuff since I don't use the trem much anyway but I imagine I will have to use the trem if I'm doing Dokken stuff.

Or, buying the trem version of this same custom shop which has a maple fretboard and using it for the band stuff. I am not a fan of using a maple boarded guitar though for my solo stuff, i like the darker tone of the rosewood for soloing tones so I could use the RG550 RI that has the rosewood.

but then, do i want to tear up a custom shop by gigging it. :(

I picked up 2 used ones with a great price on each of them. 1 Nitro & 1 Koa both with the birdseye neck. Fantastic guitars! The necks are great on these. The Natural Series Koa has a neck pickup that you can play Jazz or Hendrix all day long with great tone.Even though it has a floyd on it it still sounds like a strat.

I can't stand basswood. If you're going Charvel and want the "standard issue" 80's tone ala Ratt, Dokken, etc., I'd say alder. Maple after that.

My vote is for alder too. It's not exciting or exotic or beautiful or endangered or expensive but it just sounds right IMO.

Another vote for Alder, played with the fancy woods and alder just sounds right to me.
