Hey, sounded great James! Since we both have Friedman-modded Marshalls I had a few questions for you about your setup on that clip:

- What were your EQ settings on the amp?
- Do you use an external EQ with the amp?
- What preamp and power amp tube brands do you use?
- What cab were you using for that clip?

As you know, the gain is usable on a Friedman amp at any setting. Do you set yours pretty halfway or do you have it set higher than that?

Right now I'm using a Marshall 4x12 1960A cab with my amp. I bought a Mesa Recto 2x12 cab awhile back but it does not project as well as the Marshall. Down the road it would be nice to get a Bogner or something.

Bass - 8
Mid - 6
Treble - 6
Presence - 3

no other eq.

Meaning 75watt celestions? yeah that would be harsh. Also what are your settings and or channel you are using. The amp could be tweaked to be warmer for you. Hiss is normal for the gain unless you have a bad preamp tube causing extra noise.

Hey Dave! Yeah, it is the 75watt celestions. I have dabbled in a few different settings, just messing around with tones:

1. Treble 11 o'clock, Mids 11 o'clock, Presence 11 o'clock, Bass 2 o'clock
2. Treble and Mids at noon, Bass at 3 o'clock, Presence off

I know I mentioned this to you about my second preamp tube slot. The tube is loose in there whereas the other tubes are firmly seated in the tube slots. Would that cause noise?

Thanks everyone else for the comments and Dave, thanks for jumping in here for the help. You make kickass amps man and I appreciate your assistance!

Man, those are MY settings! :gethim: Hah!

I don't think a "loose" pretube would cause hiss, it may pop or you'll loose signal but not hiss unless it's the wrong tube. That tube socket can be tweaked to retain it better! But don't do it yourself unless you are a tech!

Thanks James and sorry for hijacking your thread. :) - Mike

I swapped out all of my preamp tubes and definitely brought the noise down and took some of the harshness out.

James thanks for posting all of your inner-sanctum workings with your posse! It's so cool to see how relaxed and layed-back you guys are.... Wayyy different than any recording experience I have suffered thru!

Will you post a link when it's all completed or is that verboten??

Thatz cool, I'm a sucker for old Mullard, Valvo or Tungsram 12AX's in vintage-style amps.. they just sound fatter and have the best mids. In modern amps, the Chinese stuff works great. And ya don't need to dime the gain on the Marsha or brown-eye modded Marshalls, that'll create much more noise in the signal. I'm sure Dave F. could quiet that bitch down some.

You can always send it I would take care of it right away.

Thanks Dave. I'm afraid to send it back after UPS destroyed the headshell (a second time) :) I think they like dropping amps from high places. :D

Then use a different courier. UPS is my least favorite. Try DHL.
