So a little over a year ago, I was still living in Maine. I had quit my job due to management lying about so many things and I wasn't getting what I was promised; and I didn't want to work for lazy fucks anymore. I was on the fence about finding another job, or just moving back home because my sister had been pushing for that. My cousin called me, who they were very well off, and promised me he could get me a job in sales from some of his colleagues/friends, and that I could live in their spare lake property, and in lieu of rent, just do some remodeling that he'd help teach me.

So, I ended up moving down and spending thousands of dollars in Uhaul fees, gas, etc, totally upending my life on a promise from family. He tried a handful of times to get me a job with his friends. He never helped coach me or teach/train me on anything like he said, and only helped showing me how to do the remodeling stuff like 3 times. He only helped tweak my resume weeks after I had made it and sent it to him, and then he just used AI to tweak it and that was it. Well, since this town is fucking devoid of jobs, I got a job making whatever I could for as many hours as I could to at least help pay my bills; it's not a lot, but I JUST made full time like 4 days ago.

He passed away maybe a month ago now, and I figured it might get a lil hairy around here, as our agreement was 1 year, then I could stay if I wanted, but have to pay rent or some other plan would be agreed upon. I come home from work today and see For Sale signs in the yard. I got no phone calls from his wife, who has preached this whole time about taking care of family, you don't make money off of family, etc. Granted, she has no income and has bills, and I understand, but it's kind of shit that I found out by coming home to signs in the yard. THEN she shows up with the realtor a little later after that. I didn't really have much to say to her, or want to talk to her, I wanted them to leave so I could cook my dinner and be pissed.

So, she's selling the house, so I have to move back to Chattanooga to find a job with people I've known or worked with for years and figure out what I'm going to do next. I just love it when family buttfucks you though, it's my favorite thing.

That sucks brother. I'm sure you'll land on your feet. A great musician who was kind of a shitty human once said, " There's nowhere you can be that isn't where you're meant to be". And it's true. Then again Billy Corgan was right once too. When he said the world is a vampire, sent to drain me. And John Frusciante was right when he said he had blood on his neck from success.

Maybe start over someplace you've always wanted to go. I had a friend named David who made great money as a cartographer. He decided fuck it, he wanted to live in Hawaii. So he had his car shipped there and just moved, all white boy and shit ( hard to get a job as a white boy in Hawaii apparently). Started out working I think at like WalMart or McDonalds or something These days he works for a cable company busting people stealing cable. But he lives on Kona, has a house that's like on a hill made out of lava and is happy as shit. Hell, he left here probably 20 years ago. His family had money too.

Sounds like a crappy situation for everyone, but it sucks you were blindsided on the place to live like that. Try not to look at it as a setback. Look at it like an opportunity to reassess goals/priorities and maybe find a new and better path to follow.

"Typical"; I know the type well brother.

Not even a friggin' 'phone call.
It seems like she's washing her hands of his side of the family, whether intentional or not. His mom is finally ready to see people again and wanted to come down to see her, but she said it felt like she wasn't interested in her coming down. She's asked for a few things of his to keep around that belonged to her parents and doesn't seem like she's going to get them.

That's fine, I'm ready to wash my hands of her and her family too.

Chattanooga is nice, I thought there was a lot of economic activity there?

Oh there are definitely many more jobs in Chattanooga than in tiny Crossville. Crossville's big issue is it's a retirement community. Old people stay at home and don't spend their money like younger people do, so the economy here doesn't really do much, and the pay is very low. 10 years ago it would've been enough, but now prices have gone up because everyone discovered TN had cheaper homes and no income tax, so all the fucking Californians and New Yorkers moved here and bought everything up.

Same thing happened in Colorado when all the Californians started moving there and really drove the prices up and brought a ton of traffic to the Denver area years back and then we legalized weed and it only got worse. My wife and I hated to leave , but it was becoming as expensive as California in many ways and has to this day only gotten even worse as far as affordability and over crowding.

We wish we could move back, but sadly it would be a major financial downgrade now.

I have nothing against anyone from California, but when you live there and move from one of the most expensive states as well as NY your money goes a lot further elsewhere and in reality you drive the prices up willing or not .

What state did you relocate to? Texas has gotten progressively more expensive but the only places that hold any attraction to me anymore are the Missouri/Arkansas Ozark mountains, and central Florida, the sunshine state being where most of my family now lives. I hate winter but don't really wanna live in town either so I'm suffering from a decision paralysis. Rural FL leaves a lot to be desired and property taxes have gotten steep on land ownership. Also, my work is here in TX, contributing to monster levels of indecision.

Ive had to start from scratch more than once in the last 60 yrs.
You gotta make your own life happen. Get a job and a place to live.
Its not terribly difficult. Lots of companies hiring fulltime for good pay.
My sister lives in Tenn and talks about moving alot but never does.
With the internet & GPS the world is your oyster crack it open.
How many resume's you put in the last month ?
Prayer works. Self pity paralyzes me as a victim. You have a choice.
Each day is a gift and not a gaurantee.
Stay off the booze & drugs they are depressants and will keep you in a hole.

I hate winter more each year and love Florida, but it would have to be on the water. Gulf side. Preferably, the Siesta Key area or Marco Island. Sadly, my budget would put me farther from water than I’d like and I have little interest in anything “central”. Hot, humid, mosquitoes, bath salts 😀. No, thanks…

It’s been years, but I spent quite a bit of time in Texas for work when we had businesses there. At the time, I would have gladly put roots down in the Los Colinas area. Not sure what it’s like today. Plus, (and they aren’t alone), the infrastructure in Texas seems problematic…

More "affordable" (depending on your def) waterfront homes can be found around Hudson and Cedar Key areas north of Tampa Bay as well as around Ft Myers and Port Charlotte. There are lakes inland but yeah, mosquitoes and humidity and no ocean breeze.

A lot of homes still haven't been fixed post Milton/Helene and are in the 350-450k range but will require some drywall and interior work in a lot of cases. The problem I have is I can afford the house but then can't afford the boat. Investment potential there but you also run the risk of future flooding and after spending quite a few years on the gulf coast both of those areas north and south of Tampa Bay are much more likely to take it on the chin from storms, which is why the pirates preferred Tampa. I thought about maybe a beach house in T.I or Madeira for four or five years until my parents pass away...

As for Los Colinas....you couldn't pay me to live in DFW.

I built homes on Siesta Key / Longboat Key. Some of the most expensive real estate on the planet. Bring your wallet.

Naples is another big money area down there that has grown exponentially in the past few years. It's really nice down there though.

We are in Travelers Rest
15 minutes outside of Greenville SC

SC seems to be the next hot spot as more people are moving here now than ever and your money does go further here, but that too it seems is starting to change.

That is a very nice area but home prices in that section of SC have really skyrocketed there the past few years along with much of western NC which I have a hard time understanding considering how rural and remote much of it is. I would guess a lot of it is driven by the proximity to DC and VA as it makes a reasonable drive for well to do people to afford beautiful mountain vacation homes.

It has been going up , but compared to Denver CO where we came from it is still about 30% cheaper overall.

We like the fact we are only 30 minutes from the mountains of NC, but still there is nothing like the Rocky mountains and we would move back if it wasn't so crazy expensive now.
